Driver killed in Newtown crash

NEWTOWN — A driver was killed in a two-car accident Sunday night on South Main Street, police said.

A pickup truck was traveling south near Botsford Hill Road about 8 p.m. when it crashed into a Honda sedan, Sgt. Aaron Bahamonde said.

The driver of the sedan was immediately killed. It was not clear whether the other driver suffered any injuries.

The identity of the victim was not immediately released Monday morning.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

First responders descend on New Milford for search and rescue drill

NEW MILFORD — Scores of firemen, paramedics, police and other first responders mobilized at Clatter Valley Park on Old Town Road Saturday to simulate a search and rescue of hikers who had gone missing the night before.

The drill was a rare occasion when members of at least eight departments came together for training in coordinating several search methods, including on foot, with K-9s and even an aerial search by the Eagle One helicopter.

Bethel man accused of selling heroin

Ryan Budd, 25, was arrested March 9 as part of a new statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, opioids or Fentanyl causing death or serious injury to users.

The initiative, announced this week, is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney.

Authorities said Danbury police officers found the victim while conducting a welfare check in a restroom at the Mobil One Stop gas station at 276 White St. about 11:40 p.m. March 1.

 

Accused drug dealer charged after Danbury chase

Police were searching for 30-year-old Edwin Rivera about 3 p.m. Monday to serve a warrant for his arrest when he saw the officers and took off on foot, police said.

Rivera, who was already facing several felony drug charges, was additionally charged with interfering with an officer and possession of narcotics.

Danbury man charged in child sex abuse

DANBURY — A city man was arrested Friday on a warrant accusing him of sexually assaulting an 8-year-old girl, police said.

Germano Vilela 41, of Moss Avenue, was charged with risk of injury to a minor, a felony, and fourth-degree sexual assault.

Police said the investigation began in 2015, but it did not release further details.

Vilela was arraigned in state Superior Court and was released after posting $25,000 bond. He pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to return to court May 5, according to the state Judicial Branch website.

State Police said the man entered the home through an unlocked slider about 8:30 a.m. When he came into the homeowner’s bedroom, he found her awake in her bed and immediately left the house in an unknown vehicle, according to the report.

Bridgeport Hospital official charged with sexually assaulting patients

BRIDGEPORT — The emergency manager and EMS coordinator at Bridgeport Hospital was arrested Friday after being accused of sexually assaulting four male patients and secretly photographing at least a dozen others while performing unauthorized medical examinations at the hospital’s nursing school.

Police said when they confronted Barkinsky, he admitted the allegations and turned over 2,181 photographs he had secretly taken of at least a dozen men while they were naked on a table and he was performing a medical procedure on them.

The hospital had no knowledge of any of the activities alleg
