One dead in apparent murder-suicide in Bethel

BETHEL — One man is dead and two others were taken to the hopsital following a shooting at 11 Governor’s Lane in Bethel Friday afternoon, said Bethel Police Chief Jeff Finch.

First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker said the shooting appears to be an attempted murder/suicide and Finch said it was being investigated as a domestic distrubance, but cautioned that the investigation was ongoing.

 

Danbury woman charged with stealing car

A Danbury woman faces a felony charge after police arrested her with a stolen car in Norwalk.

Jane Brenner, 66, was driving on Main Avenue in Norwalk on Saturday when a license plate reader from a Wilton police cruiser alerted officers to the stolen car, police said.

The vehicle had been stolen in Branford, according to the report.

Brenner was taken into custody without incident and charged with second-degree larceny. She was released after posting bond and is scheduled to appear April 11 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

 

Man on parole accused of selling heroin, crack in Danbury

DANBURY — A Waterbury man on parole was arrested Thursday after police said they found him with heroin and crack cocaine packaged for sale.

Danbury police detectives began investigating 32-year-old Aairon Thompson since learning he was selling drugs throughout the city, Lt. Christian Carroccio said in a news release.

 

Driver extricated after Danbury crash

Edwin Cabrera-Prieto, of Danbury, was driving north near George Street about 1 a.m. when he lost control of his 2002 Mercedes Benz ML320 and struck a tree, police said.

Assistant Fire Chief Mark Omasta said emergency crews used several tools, including rescue jacks, to stabilize and lift the car and free the driver.

 

Route 7 crash sends state trooper to hospital

KENT — A one-car crash that closed Route 7 in both directions Thursday afternoon involved a state trooper, authorities said.

The trooper was taken to Danbury Hospital, but the extent of his or her injuries was not immediately known. Police have not released the trooper’s identity.

The accident took place about 1 p.m.

No other details were immediately available.

 

Cops: Drunk man crashes stolen car in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD — An intoxicated driver was arrested Monday after crashing a stolen car on Federal Road, police said.

When officers arrived, they learned the 1999 Ford Explorer that Venturo was driving had been stolen in Brookfield less than an hour earlier, police said.

 

Smash-and-grab car burglaries reported in Bethel

BETHEL — Thieves smashed the passenger windows of two cars Wednesday afternoon and stole a purse from each, police said.

The burglaries took place about 3:25 p.m. at Meckauer Park, 16 Shelter Rock Road.

Police described a possible suspect vehicle as an older gray SUV with a Georgia license plate. Anyone with information is asked to call 203-744-7900.

Authorities urged residents to keep their cars locked, keep valuables out of sight and report any suspicious activity to the police department.

 

Danbury sex offender charged with failing to register

DANBURY — A Spring Street man was arrested Wednesday for failing to register as a sex offender, authorities said.

Joseph Castagnoli, 68, recently moved to Connecticut and has been seen in Danbury and New Milford, but did not contact the state’s sex offender registry, police said.

According to a New York sex offender registry, he was charged with first-degree sexual abuse in that state in 1990.

Castagnoli was held on a $50,000 bond.

 

Three charged in Danbury drug conspiracy

DANBURY — An extensive investigation into a suspected drug conspiracy turned up several pounds of marijuana along with crack cocaine and led to three arrests last week, police said in a news release Wednesday.

Members of the police department’s Special Investigations Division and Community Conditions Unit recently identified an apartment at the Linron Gardens condominium on Park Avenue as “the hub” of the suspects’ illegal drug sales.

Hours before detectives planned to search the apartment, police arrested one of the suspects during a traffic stop on Backus Avenue.

 

IRS scam hits Danbury

Police said callers posing as IRS agents tell taxpayers there is a warrant for their arrest, which they can avoid by making an immediate payment.

The agency also reminds taxpayers that it never demands payment without an opportunity to question or appeal the amount, never requires payment through pre-paid debit cards, never asks for credit or debit card numbers over the phone or threatens to arrest anyone for lack of payment.
