Charges dismissed against principals in Stamford High sex case

STAMFORD-A little more than two years after former Stamford High School Principal Donna Valentine had been arrested for failing to report an illicit sexual affair between a teacher and student that rocked the school system, a Stamford judge on Monday dismissed a charge of failing to report the months long affair to authorities.

Valentine’s former Assistant Principal Roth Nordin, who like Valentine was also charged and granted participation in the same court diversionary program for first-time offenders, had her misdemeanor charge of failing to report child abuse dismissed also.

Stamford police search for driver in hit-and-run

STAMFORD — Police are searching for the driver who hit two pedestrians Saturday night on the West Side and fled the scene.

The accident happened around 7 p.m. at Tresser Boulevard and Greenwich Avenue. Both victims were taken to Stamford Hospital, one with serious injuries and the other with minor injuries, police said.

Several pieces of the vehicle were left at the scene, which police hope will help identify the driver.

Police are asking the driver or anyone with information to contact the Stamford Police Department at 203-977-4712.

 

Wind grounds balloons at Stamford parade

STAMFORD — With wind gusts of up to 30 m.p.h. expected Sunday afternoon, organizers of Stamford’s UBS Parade Spectacular have announced that balloons will not fly at this year’s event.

The National Weather Service says the weather for the next couple of days will bring much colder temperatures, brisk winds and a chance of some snow.

Add a west wind blowing between 11 and 15 mph and gusting to as high as 31 mph, and we’ll have a wind chill between 25 and 30 degrees.

Scattered snow and rain showers are also in the forecast for Sunday night when the temperatures bottom out in the low 20s in places like Danbury.

The low will be around 32 degrees in the coastal cities of Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford and Greenwich.

Parolee caught selling drugs to undercover cop in Stamford, police say

Capt. Richard Conklin said members of the Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad obtained the phone number of someone who they heard on the street was selling drugs and called him to place an order for heroin.

Conklin said that Maignan has a long criminal record that includes convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm, escape from custody, tampering with a witness and numerous narcotics convictions.

 

Hockey team will honor slain Stamford man

STAMFORD — In a tribute to Joseph “Joey” Comunale, the 26-year-old from Stamford who was murdered in New York City over the weekend, the Westhill-Stamford co-op boys hockey team is retiring his no. 9 jersey at an upcoming alumni game.

Comunale continued to play hockey on adult leagues in Stamford.

Comunale was stabbed 15 times before his body was buried in a shallow grave, police said.

 

Husband of dead Stamford woman now in custody

Bautista-Cano’s body was discovered after their five-year-old daughter was found abandoned in a mid-town bus depot by Port Authority police in New York City.

Conklin said New York City Police have filed child endangerment charges against him for leaving his daughter in the bus depot as has Stamford police.

 

12 year sentence for Stamford manslaughter

STAMFORD-A city man who has spent the past five years in jail facing a murder charge for shooting and killing a West Side man, was sentenced Thursday to seven more years in prison after earlier pleading guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

At the end of September, only weeks away from picking a jury for trial, Catchings agreed to a plea bargain to reduce the murder charge to manslaughter and accept the prison sentence.

Stamford man to be sentenced for 2009 kidnapping

The state Appellate Court had overturned Braswell's conviction in 2010 when he was sentenced to 12 years in jail and eight years of special parole.

Braswell appealed the conviction on the grounds the judge unconstitutionally denied his motion to dismiss his public defender and be allowed to defend himself at trial.

 

Stamford group hosts forum for immigrants in wake of Trump presidency

The meeting included representatives from the Stamford Police Department, Schools Earl Kim and elected officials who conveyed that immigrants in Stamford should feel safe and supported regardless of their immigration status.
