Cops: Drunk Ridgefield father slams into police cruiser

The man was driving north on Route 67 when he turned left on a red light toward the Exit 15 on-ramp to westbound Interstate 84, hitting a Southbury police car that was driving southbound, according to the report.

Todd Schoenherr, 47, of Florida Hill Road, Ridgefield, admitted to having “a couple drinks” that night and later failed the field sobriety tests, State Police said.

 

Newtown cop honored for saving woman

AAA Northeast honored Officer Jason Flynn for his “quick actions” as well as the Newtown Police Department’s “outstanding traffic safety programs,” the association said in a news release.

The police department received the association’s Gold Award for several initiatives, including a child passenger safety program, aggressive drunk driving and motor vehicle campaigns, bike safety classes, distracted driving patrols, and a Citizens’ Police Academy.

Search for downed plane enters fifth day

NORTH SALEM, N.Y. — Officials expect little progress Monday in the search for a downed plane, which is believed to be carrying the longtime owners of a Danbury restaurant.

Rescue teams on Sunday found the back portion of the tail’s fuselage and what appears to be the passenger compartment in a Westchester County reservoir, but those pieces were too heavy to be pulled, said Adam Bosch, a spokesman for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

Region 1 school district in jeopardy of losing state funding

KENT — The Region 1 school district is in jeopardy of receiving less state funding because of a declining enrollment in one of the region’s towns.

Abby Smith, state Department of Education communications director, said Thursday North Canaan has been notified it has a “shortfall” of $22,920 for the 2015-16 school year.

If they don’t reach that goal, the penalty is equal to two times the shortfall, or $44,480 that would come out of the ECS grant for the 2017-18 school year because of how the budget works.

 

Danbury school evacuated for possible gas leak

DANBURY — Fire crews are investigating a possible gas leak at Hayestown Avenue Elementary School after an odor of natural gas was reported in the building Friday morning.

The school has been evacuated and an ambulance was called for an 8-year-old child who was having difficulty breathing, according to scanner reports.

A teacher told firefighters that the odor of gas was possibly coming from a radiator, dispatchers said.

Debris believed to be from missing Danbury-bound plane

Rescue teams spent hours searching for the plane in northern Westchester County, along with divers and helicopters from New York State Police and the Department of Environmental Protection.

The Croton Falls Fire Department, Yorktown Heights Fire Department, Civil Air Patrol, and State Police aviation also assisted in the search.

 

PD: Drunk Bethel man fled cops with baby in car

Officers saw Randall Krizan, 49, of Deepwood Drive, Bethel, driving at a high rate of speed on Plumtrees Road about 11:30 a.m. with heavy front damage to his Jeep, according to the report.

Police said they learned Krizan had been involved in a crash earlier on the corner of Plumtrees and Walnut Hill roads, where his license plate was later found.

Krizan was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, risk of injury to a minor, evading responsibility, unsafe backing and failure to obey a stop sign.

“I bring samples of all the equipment used by a beekeeper today — building the hive components, buying and installing a ‘package’ of 10,000 bees, hive maintenance requirements, and harvesting of honey,” he said in a press release.

“Attendees could go to the presentation, then have lunch at the bazaar and see what the bazaar offers, or go to the bazaar and catch the 2 p.m. presentation,” he said.
