KENT — The Region 1 school district is in jeopardy of receiving less state funding because of a declining enrollment in one of the region’s towns. Abby Smith, state Department of Education communications director, said Thursday North Canaan has been notified it has a “shortfall” of $22,920 for the 2015-16 school year. If they don’t reach that goal, the penalty is equal to two times the shortfall, or $44,480 that would come out of the ECS grant for the 2017-18 school year because of how the budget works.
