Empowering students makes Elida’s Suter one of Ohio’s top teachers

ELIDA — Mark Suter isn’t so much a computer science teacher at Elida High School as a problem-solver.
“What I tell the kids all the time is, ‘Let’s find problems that are worth solving,’” Suter said Thursday.
That led his students in the entrepreneurial club Grit9 Design to create their own company, designing websites for area businesses. This type of innovation motivates his students to try harder and exceed their own expectations.

 

Seniors admitted free Thursday at Allen County Fair

LIMA — The weather was perfect for Senior Citizens Day at the Allen County Fairgrounds.
“We’re usually not here this early as (seniors) are the only ones to come out this early,” said Casey Troyer, head of the beef department at the fairgrounds.
The vendors opened early in anticipation of the seniors coming through.
The Allen County Farm Bureau tent was packed with people eating.
“We opened at 10:30 a.m. and have had a lot of business. It’s been busy,” said Bruce Perkins of Spencerville 4-H.

 

Tour an 1843 settlement home

BLUFFTON — The Schumacher Swiss Homestead Open House is Saturday, featuring the history of the house built in 1843 by Christian and Barbara Schumacher, who came over from Switzerland.

 

‘The Vietnam War’ screened, discussed at Niswonger

VAN WERT — “The Vietnam War,” a film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, will be previewed at Niswonger Performing Arts Center at a free event.

 

Musician bringing 2-day music festival to area

HARROD — A music fest filled with different genres of music will take place this weekend at the Robin’s Nest Campgrounds in Harrod.
Timothy Cannon, of Lima, has been to a lot of music festivals in bigger cities and he felt it was time to have one near Lima.

 

Subdivision developed where school stood in Ottawa

OTTAWA — The area where Ottawa Elementary School once stood will soon see a new use.
Bob Meyer Builder Inc. is developing a new subdivision, North Thomas Street Court Subdivision, at East Fourth and North Thomas streets.
The area to the right of the old school gym, which is still owned by the Ottawa-Glandorf schools, and behind the gym has been developed into plots for the subdivision. A short entrance road has also been constructed to connect the back lot to North Thomas Street.

 

Drug arrest made Wednesday in Kenton

KENTON — An unidentified person was arrested Wednesday in Kenton after a narcotics investigation.
The Hardin County Crime Task Force executed a search warrant at 4 p.m. Wednesday at 705 E. Franklin St. During the search, heroin, marijuana, prescription pills and cash were seized. One person was arrested and is currently being held at the Multi-County Correctional Center in Marion.
The Hardin County Sheriff’s Office refused to release the name of the person arrested as of Thursday.

 

2 spared jail at Allen Co. Common Pleas Court

LIMA — Two individuals were spared jail time and were instead placed on probation during appearances Wednesday in Allen County Common Pleas Court.
Joshua Rohn, 35, of St. Marys, was sentenced by Judge David Cheney to three years of community control on a fifth-degree felony charge of theft. Rohn was also ordered to pay restitution to Walmart.

 

St. Marys City Schools schedules a building tour

ST. MARYS — The St. Marys City Schools have scheduled a board of education meeting at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, for a building tour, starting at Memorial High School, 2250 state Route 66, St. Marys.
