Ohio officer seen striking man on video suspended 15 days

CLEVELAND (AP) — A suburban Cleveland police department has suspended a white officer without pay for 15 days after he was seen in a cellphone video repeatedly punching and hitting a black man’s head on pavement after a traffic stop for a suspended driver’s license.

 

Animals, entertainers delight crowds at Allen County Fair

LIMA — Whether you enjoy woodcarving, seeing wolves perform in front of your eyes, or witnessing acrobats fly through the air at incredible heights, the 2017 Allen County Fair had it all covered.
This year’s fair offered an abundance of free entertainment throughout the grounds, giving families an opportunity to have some fun without breaking the bank.

 

Hog farm being built in Jennings Township

FORT JENNINGS — A new pig farm is being built in Jennings Township on Road U near Road 19 and residents living in the area are concerned about it affecting water and air quality.
The farm is being constructed by Dorvin L. Bear and Kelvin R. Bear, of Elida, on 5 acres of land purchased from Stanley and Kim Brenneman for $1.1 million on May 9. The Bears filed a Notice of Commencement for a private improvement project with the Putnam County Recorder’s Office stating the improvement was building a hog farm with 2,500 head of hogs.

 

Letter: I was blessed with a true Mom

It is with great sadness that I announce that my Mom, Rose Mary Latta, passed away Wednesday and is now with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mom was born to Joseph and Gertrude (Stechschulte) Kiene in 1923 on the family farm in Putnam County. She was the second of seven children, and she learned the meaning of family and hard work while growing up on the farm. Mom graduated from Pandora High School in 1941, and during World War II, she worked as a “Rosie the Riveter” at the Lima Tank Depot and later at the Bluffton Meter Works.

 

Former Lima law library to be used as office space

LIMA — With the law library no longer in the Court of Appeals Building on North Main Street, Allen County commissioners and the county Buildings and Grounds Department is reserving the space to help accommodate future renovations at the Allen County Courthouse.

 

Being heavenly minded

Much of the church is so heavenly minded that they are no earthly good, so the old saying goes.
Much of the church needs to be transformed, to have the mind of Christ. I think that many of us have forgotten that Jesus is Jewish. Therefore, if we are to have the mind of Christ, we need to have a Jewish mindset and not an earthly mindset. Let this mind be in you, which is in Christ Jesus. Most of the church is trying to get to heaven.

 

US stock indexes sag as a two-day rally peters out

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks retreated on Wednesday and gave back some of their gains from a day earlier, when the Standard & Poor’s 500 index had one of its best days of the year.
Advertising companies and retailers had some of the steepest drops on worries about their earnings, while prices for Treasury bonds and gold rose modestly as investors sought safer ground. It’s the latest move lower for a stock market that’s yo-yoed since setting a record high earlier this month.

 

Reservoir Road to close Thursday for work

LIMA — Reservoir Road, between Phillips and Pevee roads in Jackson Township, will close from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the Allen County Engineer’s Office.
The closure will allow for chip sealing with emergency vehicles maintaining access.

Lima seeks public input in Bloomberg survey

LIMA — The city of Lima is participating in the Bloomberg Philanthropies 2017 Mayors Challenge and is seeking public input in an online survey that could put the city in line for a donation.
The survey, located at http://bit.ly/2irUo41, asks what those surveyed believe is the greatest challenge facing Lima and why, as well as what unconventional solution could help address this issue and how this issue would be categorized, be it health, safety, the economy and so on.

 

Arraignment set Thursday for murder suspect

LIMA — A Lima man is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in Allen County Common Pleas Court for his alleged role in a 2016 shooting that left one man dead.
Devonte M. Andrews, 21, was indicted earlier this month by a grand jury and is charged with murder with a firearm specification in the Aug. 18, 2016, shooting death of 29-year-old Edward Henry at the Lima Estates Apartments, 760 E. Fourth St. The charge is an unclassified felony.
