Reds rally to beat Cubs

CINCINNATI — Jose Peraza had a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double in the eighth inning on Thursday night, rallying the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs that avoided a series sweep.
The Reds loaded the bases with two outs against Pedro Strop (3-4), putting together two hits and a walk. Peraza, who was 0 for 4 off the bench this season, doubled over the head of Ian Happ in center for a 3-2 lead. Strop let in another run with a wild pitch.

 

Ada’s Woods reaches 1,000 kills in volleyball loss to Coldwater

ADA — Coldwater won in straight sets 25-10, 25-15 and 25-22 Thursday night against Ada. Melina Woods, who notched her career 1,000 kill, recorded 17 on the night for the host Bulldogs. Going into the match Woods needed 14 to reach the milestone. Maddie Gossard had 12 assists and Sydney Gossard recorded three aces. Olivia Alexander posted 17 digs.
Ada falls to 3-2.

Leipsic turns away Elida in volleyball

ELIDA — The youth and varsity inexperience of the Elida volleyball team showed Thursday night as the Bulldogs took on the Leipsic Vikings .
The Vikings used their size advantage the entire match and raced to wins of 25-10, 25-9, and 25-13 to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
The Bulldogs, meanwhile, have only two seniors and two juniors on the roster; the rest being sophomores and freshmen who are seeing considerable playing time.

 

Indians batter Sale, Red Sox 13-6

CLEVELAND — Red Sox ace Chris Sale was battered while matching the shortest start of his career, and rookie Yandy Diaz got four hits as the Cleveland Indians beat Boston 13-6 Thursday night in a matchup of division leaders.
Sale (14-6) was tagged for seven runs on seven hits and three walks in just three innings. Cleveland’s injury-riddled lineup, held to a combined four hits by the Red Sox in the previous two games, erupted against one of the top contenders for the AL Cy Young Award and roughed up Boston’s bullpen.

 

More evacuations as Hurricane Harvey bears down on Texas

HOUSTON (AP) — Harvey intensified into a hurricane Thursday and steered for the Texas coast with the potential for up to 3 feet of rain, 125 mph winds and 12-foot storm surges in what could be the fiercest hurricane to hit the United States in almost a dozen years.
Forecasters labeled Harvey a “life-threatening storm” that posed a “grave risk.” Millions of people braced for a prolonged battering that could swamp dozens of counties more than 100 miles inland.

 

Massachusetts hospital worker claims record lottery jackpot

BRAINTREE, Mass. (AP) — A 53-year-old Massachusetts hospital worker stepped forward Thursday to claim the biggest undivided lottery jackpot in U.S. history — a $758.7 million Powerball prize — after breaking the news to her employer the way the rest of us only dream of: “I called and told them I will not be coming back.”
“The first thing I want to do is just sit back and relax,” Mavis L. Wanczyk told reporters at a news conference.

Lima schools considers AI program

LIMA — Representatives of a partnership between IBM and Office Depot gave a presentation on Watson Classroom to the Lima school board Thursday at South Science Technology Magnet.
Watson Classroom is an artificially intelligent augmented learning program, said Penny Reinart and Bryan Bown from Office Depot. The program would take the data and information input by teachers — grades, observations about each child’s performance, personal data — and it would learn from it, he said.
