Delphos St. John’s looking to join the playoff hunt

DELPHOS – Delphos St. John’s took a big leap last year.
The Blue Jays went from 1-9 in 2015 to 5-5 last season.
With another win or two this year, the Blue Jays realize they can be back in the playoff hunt.
“We went from 1-9 to 5-5 and now can we win those close games where we can go 7-3 or 6-4 and sneak in the playoffs?’’ St. John’s veteran coach Todd Schulte said. “Hopefully, that’s our next step.’’
The Blue Jays return 15 starters, with five on offense and 10 on defense.

Grove hopes experience leads to maturity

COLUMBUS GROVE – Playing football with urgency is good. Playing it with urgent care is not so good.
After injuries sent more than a dozen Columbus Grove football players to the sideline last fall, the Bulldogs had one of the youngest lineups in the area.
With a year of experience the still young Bulldogs hope to improve on last season’s 4-6 record this season.
“We have 13 guys coming back who started but they didn’t necessarily start because they were ready. They started because they had to,” Columbus Grove coach Andy Schafer said.

Bluffton ready to take the next step

BLUFFTON – Last season, former Bluffton football standout Jeff Richards came back home to take over the reins of the Bluffton football program.
Richards had his share of challenges in 2016, as the Pirates went 3-7, after starting the season 3-1 with two shutouts.
This season, Richards is hoping the offseason commitment from his athletes will make a difference.

Redskins reload for shot at fourth WBL title

WAPAKONETA – For the last three years, Wapakoneta has either won or shared the Western Buckeye League title and there is no reason to believe that they will be battling for a fourth this year with a host of talent and experience returning.
Under the guidance of head coach Travis Moyer, the Redskins have three goals that remain the same each year and that is to win the league, make the state playoffs and win state champion.

Kenton offense key to early success

KENTON – The Kenton Wildcats have a football tradition of great success – six regional titles, two state runner-up finishes and two state championships.
The Wildcats are going to have to overcome a rash of injuries if they hope they hope to reach that level of success this season.
Kenton currently is looking at 16 players with injuries, including three who will miss the entire season.
“It is what it is,” Coach Brent Fackler said of the injuries. “We are just trying to get healthy.”
