Cops: Bold shoplifters on the loose

STAMFORD — Police are on the lookout for several people including a surf and turf bandit scoring big on five-fingered discounts in local stores.

The man picked up a drone and two earphones worth $1,200 and walked out the front door without paying for them, police said.

Shawinsky said the pair walked in with a shopping cart and shopping bags and placed six stacks of shirts into the bags and wheeled the cart out of the store.

 

Boys group graduates celebrated at Zodys

Boyd, who has spent much of his 27-year career in the department’s Youth Bureau, said they talked about police shootings, peer pressure and feeling of being drawn to the street where drugs and violence reign.

There were a dozen members in the group ages 11-13.

Stamford man charged with stashing gun before probation appointment

STAMFORD-A convicted felon whose East Side home was shot up twice last week was charged with stashing a pistol across the street from the Stamford courthouse where he was going to see his probation officer, police said. Victor Cruz, 21, of Seaside Avenue, was charged with criminal possession of a revolver and was held in lieu of a $250,000 court appearance bond. Conklin said the police officers tracking Cruz knew he was going to see his probation officer at the courthouse and even knew he was about to have his probation violated.

 

Attorney withdraws FOIA complaint against board

STAMFORD — An attorney and city representative withdrew his Freedom of Information Act complaint against the Board of Finance Monday after he said it agreed to an open-government training session.

Kieran Ryan argued in his May complaint to the state FOIA commission that the board violated open-meeting rules by discussing in private the settlement terms for suits resulting from the 2011 Christmas Day fire that killed five people in Shippan.

 

Police: Stamford man attacks family with sword

STAMFORD — Police say a Spruce Street man went “buck wild” this weekend, attacking a family with a samurai sword after punching their special needs child in the face.

Albert Sistrunk, 44, faces several felony charges of assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Accused Stamford bank robber faces new charges

STAMFORD — A Norwalk man accused of a series of bank robberies faces new charges for using a counterfeit check to withdraw more than $10,000, police said. Joseph Boccuzzi, 34, who has been held in lieu of $1 million bond at the Northern Correctional Institution in Somers, appeared this week in the Stamford courthouse where he was charged with second-degree larceny and forgery.

 

Patrol officers issued opiate antidote for use on street

STAMFORD-About 30 patrol officers received a crash course in administering the opiate antidote drug Narcan and were issued applicators of Narcan at their lineup Wednesday afternoon.

Police and emergency medical services officials said the reason for the change in policy allowing police officers to administer the drug is because of a steep rise in overdoses in Stamford coupled with a fear that police officers may become contaminated by particularly strong strains of the opioid drugs they encounter.

 

Martin is Democrats’ pick for mayor

STAMFORD — Incumbent Mayor David Martin was unchallenged for the Democratic nod to run for re-election at his party’s nominating convention.

Tong called Martin a “steady and serious person” and said his leadership is needed in the current political climate.

For the first time in several election cycles, Democrats nominated a town clerk candidate, Lyda Ruijter, to challenge incumbent Donna Loglisci for the position of city record keeper.
