Trial date set for Novi mom's murder

A trial date is set for the Novi man charged with murder in the strangulation death of his wife in January.Jury selection will begin Sept. 4 in Oakland County Circuit Court in the trial of Derrick Dixon, 32, who faces life in prison if convicted. He faces one count of first-degree premeditated homicide in the death of his wife, Heather, 32, at their home in the Oakland Glens mobile home on Jan.

 

Local organization offers free boat rides to veterans

Since 2009, this once a year event is a way for boating enthusiasts to give back to veterans by sharing their boats and showing their appreciation. The nonprofit group is 100 percent volunteer, made up of veterans and non-veterans. After a two-hour boat ride, they return to the club for lunch, a ceremony thanking the veterans, POW's and MIA's and they are given gifts.

 

Troy School District staff learns how to react in active shooter situation

The first group of Troy School District employees have completed two days of an intensive new active shooter training program called ALICE. All other staff and students will be trained in the program during the 2018-19 school year.ALICE, which stands for "Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate," is a different way of training for violent situations - one that gives participants several different pro-active options, rather than the single "traditional lockdown" method.

 

Rochester Hills residents donate to camp for burn injured children

Great Lakes Burn Camp is a haven for burn injured children; it is a place where children with scars can play and laugh without feeling awkward or different.This orgnization was nominated by 100 Faithful Friends member John Kastran to be the receipent of a $10,000 donation.The Rochester Hills based group 100 Faithful Friends congregate quarterly to vote on which local charity will be the beneficiary of their group donation - 100 members giving $100 each.

PONTIACCARE House awarded $65K grantThe Children's Hospital of Michigan Foundation awarded CARE House of Oakland County a $65,000 grant for its Breaking the Cycle of Abuse program - which currently serves more than 7,000 individuals annually.Grant funding will enable CARE House to create two new positions, including a full-time Director of Community Education and part-time community outreach facilitator to develop, coordinate and facilitate new prevention programs.

 

Berkley man to represent U.S. in Kettlebell World Championship

Dale Wall of Berkley was selected to be on Team USA in the Kettlebell Sport World Championship in Daugavpils, Latvia. Wall is a member of Victorious MMA and Fitness in Troy and is a graduate from Waterford Kettering. He has participated in various kettlebell competitions and charity runs throughout the years.

 

Highland Township fifth grader wins poster contest

Milford-based Huron Valley State Bank hosted a "Money Smart Week" poster contest for elementary age students.The children were tasked with designing a poster that answered the question, "Why is a penny saved a penny earned?" There was a $25 cash reward for the best poster by grade level and a grand prize cash award of $100.

 

Rochester Hills student recognized as national scholar

Sahijnoor S. Mahal of Rochester Hills has been selected to be a member of The National Society of High School Scholars.The Society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitments.Claes Nobel, founder of The National Society of High School Scholars, said, "I am honored to recognize the hard work, sacrifice and commitment that Sahijnoor has demonstrated to achieve this exceptional level of academic excellence.

 

Paws for Life Rescue offers free cat and dog adoptions until July 4

Now through July 4, all adult cats and dogs over six months old will be available for adoption at no charge from Paws for Life Rescue in Troy.This is made possible by the Best Friends Animal Society, which is covering the adoption fees."If you get excited when a stranger pays for your coffee, imagine the joy you'll bring to someone who is ready to adopt their next best friend and finds out the adoption fee has been covered," said Julie Castle, chief executive officer of Best Friends Animal Society.
