Trying to beat the heat with some summer fun

Intense heat greeted fans of summer as Summer Festival in Highland Township kicked off on Saturday June 30. Besides the sunshine, visitors enjoyed water games, thanks to the Highland Township Fire Department, as well as live music, food and crafts. The Summer Festival concluded Sunday.

 

Immigration policy protest held in Pontiac

A protest was held Saturday morning, June 30, 2018, as part of a national effort to highlight anger over the federal policy of separating families of immigrants coming into the U.S. if they are to be charged with illegally entering or attempting to enter. The group of over 250 gathered outside of Pontiac Public Library, then marched around the perimeter.

 

Metro Detroit media professional elected to National Radio Hall Of Fame

Fred Jacobs, founder of Jacobs Media and jacapps of Bingham Farms, was elected to the National Radio Hall of Fame. He is the first non-broadcaster to be inducted. He joins a list of Detroit radio personalities who've been inducted to the Hall of Fame, including J.P. McCarthy, Ernie Harwell, Dick Purtan, Casey Kasem and Paul W.

Troy Community Center open as a place to cool off during heat wave

The Troy Community Center, 3179 Livernois Road, will act as a cooling center from Friday, June 29, through Sunday, July 1.Temperatures may reach the low to mid 90s during this time period, with heat indexes from 95-105 degrees.Hot weather over the course of several days will create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible especially for older adults, children and people who are sick, as well as pets.

 

New tax checkoffs allow funding for World War II memorial in Royal Oak

A new state law will allow organizations to use income tax checkoffs to make donations to fund a World War II memorial in Royal Oak. Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation that allows the checkoffs, said State Sen, Marty Knollenbery (R-Troy).The checkoffs are a funding mechanism that allow the state to accept contributions from taxpayers for

 

Royal Oak plans to construct downtown park in 2020

Royal Oak will collect information and opinions from residents, businesses, service groups and visitors to the city to guide the design of its first downtown park.Construction of the park -- to be built on a two-acre site where City Hall and the police station now stand -- is planned to begin in the spring of 2020.

Ja'juan Gabriel, downtown Pontiac's adopted son, dead at 24

Ja'juan Darnell Gabriel, a well-known personality in Pontiac's downtown community, has died at the age of 24. On Monday, June 25, Gabriel went to the Dawson Mill Dam on the Clinton River in Pontiac's Beaudette Park to retrieve lures and garbage from the water,
