The Sears store at Oakland Mall in Troy will close in late September, according to a report on WDIV-TV.Sears Holdings Corporation announced the closing Monday, July 2. The Oakland Mall Sears will join closings, announced earlier this year, in Flint, Dearborn, Sterling Heights and Traverse City.

 

Mexican matriarch Carmen Martinez of Trini & Carmen's dead at 89

Carmen Martinez, co-founder of Trini & Carmen's Mexican Restaurant in Waterford, has died at the age of 89. An activist for the Hispanic and Latino community all her life, Martinez died on Friday, June 29 after a series of recent health complications according to Anthony Martinez Beven, her grandson.

 

Milford residents asked to renew fire services tax on August ballot

If you live in Milford or Milford Township, you will see a tax proposal on this year's election ballot. For the first time in 10 years, residents will be asked to renew the fire services tax that funds the fire department's operations, which includes the purchase and maintenance of equipment as well as salaries.

 

Sheriff's dog tracks down cocaine-carrying suspect

Two men are in the Oakland County Jail after a traffic stop yielded more than 50 grams of cocaine. The stop occurred 9:30 p.m. Thursday on Cesar Chavez at Adelaide in Pontiac. First, the vehicle was slow to stop and then the passenger jumped from the car and ran away carrying a black bag.

 

Deputies cite bar for underage drinking, being over capacity

The Boat Bar in Brandon Township faces a violation of fire codes, and a manager was cited was allowing underage drinking. Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office were called to the bar at about 11 p.m. Thursday after complaints, and once there, they found 107 people inside despite the maximum occupancy set at 89 people.

 

Road Commission beginning more projects in Oakland County

Over the next three months, The Road Commission for Oakland County will be conducting repair work along eight roadways as part of its joint repair program. The first of nine projects will begin July 9 in Rochester Hills along Livernois Road between Walton Boulevard and Timberlea Street, just south of Rochester High School.

Scotch Lake Residents Beach in West Bloomfield Township is closed until late July.The public beach on Scotch Lake has been closed since June 26, according to Oakland County Environmental Health Services.The beach was closed for one day. The next day, June 27, the county ordered it closed for 30 days.

 

30-year-old Pontiac man found dead in car outside home

A 30-year-old Pontiac man was found dead in a car outside his home Sunday morning by the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. The man was found sitting in the driver's side of a vehicle parked in the driveway, according to police. A bullet hole was found in the driver's side front window with a spent casing on the ground outside the car.

 

Canvas Pontiac Awards return with stilt walkers, aerial performances

The annual Canvas Pontiac Awards Celebration is coming up this weekend on Saturday, July 7. Each year, the art competition calls for work from around the country. The top 25 pieces are enlarged to 8-foot by 10-foot installations and hung around downtown Pontiac in the spring.
