The Oakland Community Health Network is helping parents with disabled children this summer. According to the network, parents are beginning to adjust their schedules as their children are being let out of school for summer vacation, which can cause stress and frustration. Making this adjustment can be especially difficult for parents whose children have intellectual or developmental disabilities who are making the adjustment from a structured school schedule.

 

Two-week ticket amnesty coming to Waterford's 51st District Court

The 51st District Court in Waterford will hold a two week ticket amnesty program later this month. From July 30 to Aug. 10, the court will waive late fees and penalties for tickets issued in Waterford Township by Waterford police, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office and the Michigan State Police.

 

$25,000 in scholarships awarded to Pontiac students by AkzoNobel

Global paints and coatings company AkzoNobel recently awarded $25,000 in scholarships to five Leaders of the Future students. The youth leadership volunteer organization in Pontiac is made up of high school and college students, working on service efforts in the community. Since the start of 2017, the group has removed graffiti and more than 60 pounds of trash from Pontiac parks.

No injuries were reported after an accidental barn fire in Commerce Township. According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred shortly after 12 a.m. on July 1. Police searching for suspect after man in underwear allegedly attempts break-in at Rochester Hills home

Police are investigating after a man wearing only boxer shorts reportedly tried to break into a Rochester Hills home. According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred at 6:24 a.m. on July 1 in the 900 block of Majestic. Homeowners told police that a white man wearing only boxer shorts was reportedly trying to break through a glass pane on a rear door to the home.

 

Bloomfield Hills woman hurt in personal watercraft explosion in Commerce Township

Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit and the Commerce Township Fire Department responded to multiple watercraft incidents over the weekend. According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the first incident occurred just before 3 p.m. on June 30. Deputies responded to the Union Lake DNR Access Site after a personal watercraft reportedly exploded near the boat dock.

 

Detroit Zoo bird expert recognized

A bird expert at the Detroit Zoological Society has been recognized for his efforts in the recovery of the Great Lakes piping plover (PLUV'-er).Tom Schneider received the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Recovery Champion Award at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.Each summer for the past 18 years, Schneider has organized people from zoos across the country to travel to Michigan's Biological Station in Pellston where they work on the captive-rearing effort for the tiny shorebirds.
