120 Lexington, SC, inmates get sick

LEXINGTON, S.C. — State health officials are investigating an illness that is affecting a large group of inmates at the Lexington County Detention Center.

Capt. Adam Myrick of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department tells local media that about 120 inmates have been treated for a gastrointestinal illness in the last two days.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control responded to the jail Wednesday to try to determine what is causing the illness, where it’s coming from and how it’s spreading.

 

Truck overturns on Bobby Jones ramp

 
The Peach Orchard Road on-ramp to westbound Bobby Jones Expressway is blocked due to over overturned tractor trailer.
Deputies remained on the scene at 7:45 a.m. It appeared that the truck flipped onto its side while traveling on the ramp. No other vehicles were involved. Officials are working to unload the truck before flipped it back upright. The ramp is expected to be closed for some time.

Officials announce plans to replace I-20 bridges over Augusta Canal, Savannah River

Georgia and South Carolina Department of Transportation officials announced plans Wednesday to replace Interstate 20 bridges over the Augusta Canal and Savannah River.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Georgia State Transportation Board Member Don Grantham said.
The two bridges have brought up safety concerns in past years due to the number of crashes. According to the Georgia DOT, there have been 42 crashes, including one death, on the Georgia side from 2013 to 2015.

 

Cameron heads out as prime minister

LONDON — David Cameron left 10 Downing St. on Wednesday for the last time as Britain’s prime minister, making the short trip to Buckingham Palace to tender his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II after declaring that leading the country had been “the greatest honor of my life.”

Cameron made a brief statement outside the prime minister’s residence, his home for more than six years, accompanied by his wife Samantha and children Nancy, Elwen and Florence.

 

Eller to leave Augusta for Georgia College

Jason Eller is leaving Augusta University to become the new head baseball coach at Georgia College.
The Bobcats announced Eller’s hiring Wednesday. He’ll be formally introduced Thursday as the ninth coach in program history during a news conference.

Court denies Brady's 'Deflategate' appeal

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court has rejected Tom Brady’s attempt to get a new hearing on his “Deflategate” suspension.

Brady was asking for the full 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to hear the case. In April, a three-judge panel said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was within his powers when he suspended the star quarterback four games for his role in a scheme to doctor the footballs used in a Jan. 18, 2015, playoff game.

 

Savannah River Remediation receives safety award

Savannah River Remediation, the Savannah River Site’s liquid waste contractor, received the Palmetto Shining Star Safety Award from the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation.
SRR was selected for the award for its dedication to safety both on site and within the local community. According to a news release, SRR reached one million or more safe work hours without a lost-time injury or illness in 2015 and achieved a significantly lower incidence rate than reported by South Carolina in the previous year.

 

Local police departments report increased displays of gratitude since Dallas shootings

 
Local law enforcement agencies, large and small, have received an outpouring of support and kindness since the shooting deaths of five officers at a protest in Dallas late Thursday.
“It does make the job easier, knowing the support we have from the community,” said Aiken Department of Pub­lic Safety Lt. Jake Mahoney.
By mid-morning Friday, he said, tokens of appreciation were pouring into the department.

 

Four locations open Monday for advance voting in July 26 runoff

Richmond County Board of Elections is expanding advance voting in the July 26 runoff to four locations.
The change comes after the board reexamined its policy Monday and determined that, unlike a primary runoff, multiple advance voting locations are necessary in the citywide runoff election for state court judge, board member Chip Barbee said. The only location currently open is at the Augusta Municipal Building.
