Clemson's Tankersley named to Jim Thorpe watch list

Clemson senior cornerback Cordrea Tankersley has been named to the watch list for the 2016 Jim Thorpe Award.
Tankersley, a former Silver Bluff star, started all 15 games at cornerback for Clemson last year when the Tigers won the Atlantic Coast Conference championship and finished No. 2 in the nation with a 14-1 record. The native of Beech Island led the Tigers in interceptions last year with five, which tied for 20th in the nation. He also had 60 tackles and 11 passes broken up.

 

Martinez theft suspect sought

Columbia County authorities are asking the public’s help in identifying a woman suspected in the theft of $30 of lip sore cream from a Walgreens drug store.
The incident took place June 27 at the Walgreens at 3900 Washington Road at the Bobby Jones intersection.

Duncan announces retirement from NBA

Spieth won't play in Olympics

TROON, Scotland — Jordan Spieth withdrew from the Olympics on Monday, leaving golf without its top four players when the sport returns to the games for the first time since 1904.
The decision was announced by International Golf Federation President Peter Dawson.
Spieth was the last player to say he was not going to Rio, telling the IGF it was for “health reasons.” Spieth was practicing at Royal Troon during the IGF news conference and was not expected to speak until Tuesday.

 

Missing Atlanta Zoo python found

ATLANTA — Official say a large python has been found after leaving its private cage at the Atlanta Zoo.

Zoo Atlanta spokeswoman Rachel Davis tells local news media that the nearly 6-foot long, non-venomous Timor python was located Sunday morning. The snake had escaped Saturday from the zoo’s Conservation Breeding Center.

Murray wins second Wimbledon title

LONDON — After Britain famously endured a 77-year wait between Wimbledon men’s champions, Andy Murray has given the host country a pair of titles in quick succession.

Murray dulled booming serves with quick-reflex returns, played impressively mistake-free tennis while coming up with daring passing shots and beat Milos Raonic 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) on Sunday for his second trophy at the All England Club since 2013 and third Grand Slam championship overall.

 

Commission weighs limits on top employees' severance pay

 
The city’s highest paid employees might see a slight change in their eligibility for severance packages under changes being discussed by the Augusta Commission.
Since 2007 or earlier, city department heads have been eligible for up to six months’ salary and benefits, based on their years of service, if fired without cause.

 

Barnwell man slain, suspect caught

BARNWELL, S.C. -- A 25-year-old Barnwell man is dead following a shooting Friday night.
Cleveland Abrams III, of Litchfield Street, was killed as a result of a gunshot wound to his chest, Barnwell County Coroner Lloyd Ward said in a press release.
A suspect was apprehended by deputies at another location shortly after the shooting. However, his name and information has not been released.

Rally, march calls for justice

Demanding an end to acts of police brutality, a crowd of more than 300 gathered Saturday at Augusta Common to make a statement and encourage others to push for change.
They heard briefly from speakers who deplored this week’s slayings of black men by policemen in Louisiana and Minnesota, then watched as organizers launched red, white and black balloons, symbolizing the issues involved and the two men killed this week.
