Serena Williams wins Wimbledon for 22nd major title

LONDON — Serena Williams won her record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title by beating Angelique Kerber 7-5, 6-3 in the Wimbledon final on Saturday.
Williams pulled even with Steffi Graf for the most major championships in the Open era, which began in 1968. Now Williams stands behind only Margaret Court’s all-time mark of 24.

 

Indiana gets Mega Million winner

DES MOINES, Iowa  — One jackpot-winning ticket was sold in Friday night's  Mega   Millions drawing, a lottery official said.
Virginia Lottery spokesman John Hagerty told The Associated Press the winning ticket was sold in Indiana.
The consortium of lottery organizations that runs   Mega   Millions said a ticket matching all five white balls and the yellow ball would win a an estimated $540 million.

 

Valdosta officer ambushed while responding to call

A man who called 911 to report a car break-in Friday ambushed a south Georgia police officer dispatched to the scene, sparking a shootout in which both the officer and suspect were wounded, authorities said. Both are expected to survive.

 

The Latest: Mayor says Dallas is safe, can start to heal

DALLAS — The Latest on the shooting of police officers in Dallas (all times local):
5:15 p.m.
Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings says authorities believe a 25-year-old suspect in the attack that killed five police officers and wounded seven others was the lone attacker and that the city is safe.
Rawlings said at a news conference Friday that he believes the city can start healing now.
Police killed the suspect, Micah Xavier Johnson, using a robot-delivered bomb after they say negotiations with him failed. Two civilians also were wounded.

Heat advisory issued for area

There is a heat advisory for most of the Augusta area until 7 p.m., the National Weather Service says.

The affected counties include Richmond, Columbia, Burke, McDuffie, McCormick, Edgefield, Aiken and Barnwell.
Temperatures are expected to reach anywhere from 99 to 102 today, with heat index values around 110 degrees.
The impact of the high temperatures could cause heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which could occur quickly if you are working outside, the weather service said.

 

Federer loses in Wimbledon semifinals

LONDON — Roger Federer’s bid for a record eighth Wimbledon title was cut short in the semifinals Friday by Milos Raonic, a big-serving Canadian who came from two sets to one down to win in five and reach his first Grand Slam final.
Raonic beat the seven-time champion 6-3, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Centre Court, handing the Swiss great his first loss ever in the Wimbledon semifinals after 10 consecutive wins.

Gunman fires at Georgia cop

 
A gunman in a passing vehicle opened fire on an Atlanta area police officer on routine patrol, firing multiple shots before he was apprehended after a short car chase, Roswell police said early today. No one was hit by the shots, they said.
The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m., a few hours after a sniper attack that killed five Dallas police officers during a protest so Roswell officers were already on edge, Roswell police Det. Zachary Frommer said.

 

Three released, one remains hospitalized after lightning strike

One person remains unconscious after being struck by lightning Wednesday in Edgefield County.
About 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Edgefield County dispatch received a call that four people had been struck by lightning at Titan Farms on Luke Bridge Road. All four were transported to AU Medical Center, AU Medical Center spokeswoman Denise Parrish said.
