Previews for the upcoming Salvation Army Auto Auction started Tuesday.
The auto auction, which will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, will have 65 cars, boats, RVs, jet skis and a limousine. The feature car is a 2014 Honda Accord. Others include a 2000 Volkswagen Cabrio convertible, a 2001 Toyota Highlander, a Cherokee camper and a 1994 Cadillac limo.

Safety as well as maintenance on the downtown riverfront will go for discussion in two Augusta Commission committee items today.
Commissioner Sean Frantom is calling for talks today about “safety during large downtown events” in light of the July Fourth gunfire at Riverwalk Augusta. One of the shooting suspects was wounded and another is being sought by police.

Deputies are on the scene of an armed robbery at Dollar General on Deans Bridge Road.
An employee called police about 9:10 a.m. after a man with a gun demanded money. A witness last saw him running toward the Villa Marie apartments.
Deputies and K-9s are in the area setting up a perimeter and conducting a search.

 
Police a seeking a pink-haired woman who stole a cell phone while grocery shopping.
Surveillance video show the unidentified woman taking a black LG cell phone from the counter at Food Lion, 2116 Windsor Spring Road, about 6 p.m. July 3. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is seeking her for questioning. Anyone with information is asked to contact Investigator Thomas Langford at (706) 821-1038 or 821-1020.
 

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an early morning shooting in Beech Island.
Deputies responded to 5060 Westminster Way about 12:44 a.m. and found a man in his residence with a gunshot. He told deputies he was standing on the front porch when two armed men got out of a gold-colored vehicle and shot at him several times before driving away.
According to a news release, the victim was shot once in the arm. Other shots struck the apartment structure.
The victim was transported to an area hospital.

 
 
LOS ANGELES — Beware: “Pokemon Go,” a new smartphone game based on cute Nintendo characters like Squirtle and Pikachu, can be harmful to your health.
The “augmented reality” game, which layers gameplay onto the physical world, became the top grossing app in the iPhone app store just days after its Wednesday release in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. And players have already reported wiping out in a variety of ways as they wander the real world — eyes glued to their smartphone screens — in search of digital monsters.

ATHENS, Ga. -- For the second time in a month a naked University of Georgia student was taken to the hospital after being found naked in public while apparently high on drugs.
According to a UGA police report, a 20-year-old student last week was seen walking on Oak Street while wearing nothing but a baseball cap and carrying a fake guitar. The 20-year-old told police he had consumed as many as six tabs of LSD.

BEAUFORT, S.C. — South Carolina investigators are considering a request to investigate after U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford’s niece’s foot was apparently injured in an incident involving the congressman.
 
A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department incident report shows the injury occurred at Coosaw Plantation, the Sanford family farm, June 18.
 
The report, in which many of the details are blacked out, did not describe the injury or who contacted deputies.

ATLANTA    — Most of the hundreds of people who gathered for a sit-in outside the Georgia governor's mansion had departed the scene by 2 a.m. today.
The   Atlanta   Journal-Constitution reports  Mayor Kasim Reed and Police Chief George Turner appeared at the sit-in Monday night, where they spoke privately with protest leaders. Then most of the crowd headed home.
Turner told protesters earlier they could not stay there all night.

Augusta’s three five-acre solar panel arrays will place it first in Geor­gia among municipal solar projects, Mayor Hardie Davis said Monday.
At a groundbreaking Monday, the mayor bragged on the city’s effort – a partnership with Georgia Power and contractor Inman Solar that was set in motion last year by the Augusta Commission.
