Savannah River Site resumes normal activity

A suspicious item was discovered Wednesday afternoon at the Savannah River National Laboratory, which prompted emergency response activities.
Following a thorough investigation, the suspicious item was determined to be non-threatening and Savannah River Site has returned to normal operations, according to a news release.

 

South Carolina escapee captured in Columbia County

A prisoner who escaped from a South Carolina corrections facility was arrested in Appling after a passerby reported the man fighting with a woman on the side of the road.
According to a news release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, police responded to the 6400 block of Cobbham Road around 11 a.m. Wednesday morning for reports of a domestic disturbance.

Pipeline hearing set for Thursday in Evans

The committee to evaluate petroleum pipelines in Georgia will hold a public hearing in Columbia County on Thursday.
The hearing at 10 a.m. in the auditorium of Building A at the Evans Government Center Complex at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive is the second of three the Joint State Commission on Petroleum Pipelines are holding. The first was held last month in Savannah and the final is scheduled Nov. 17 in Atlanta.

Jacksonville Suns changing name to Jumbo Shrimp

The long-standing tradition of the Suns' minor-league baseball team in Jacksonville, which dates to 1962, will undergo a major transformation next season when the franchise changes its name to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp.
Owner Ken Babby, who purchased the Florida Marlins Double-A affiliate from Peter Bragan Jr. two years ago (allowing Bragan to stay as owner in 2015), will unveil the name change and new logo Wednesday in a 10 a.m. news conference at the Times-Union Center.

 

Cooler weather predicted for weekend

The week started with record highs, but an approaching cool front will bring more seasonal temperatures for the weekend.
On Monday the high temperature at Augusta's Bush Field reached 89 degrees, tying the record high from 1961. According to the National Weather Service, the normal high temperature for the first week of November is in the low 70s.
The Climate Prediction Center's latest one- and three-month outlooks, which were released in late October, predict more above normal temperatures and below normal rainfall.

 

Walker gets early release from federal probation

Former Georgia Senate Majority Leader Charles Walker is completely free of the criminal justice system that had him imprisoned and under its thumb supervision for the past decade.
In an order signed Monday, U.S. District Court Judge Dudley H. Bowen Jr. granted Walker's request to be released early from the federal form of probation called supervised release.

Graduation rates increase in Columbia County but drop in Richmond

After increasing its graduation rate from 2014 to 2015, Richmond County public schools took a step back in 2016.
According to the Georgia Department of Education, 76.7 percent of Richmond County students graduated in 2016 – down from 77.6 percent in 2015. In Columbia County, 89 percent of students graduated, up from 87.6 percent a year ago.
Statewide, Georgia graduated 79.2 percent of its students last year.

DOE, DHEC reach agreement on SRS liquid waste

An agreement has been reached on treating more than 36 million gallons of radioactive and toxic liquid waste stored in aging Savannah River Site tanks.
The Department of Energy and South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control announced the agreement today, according to a DOE news release. Under the agreement, SRS will process the liquid waste starting this year through 2022 to mitigate the delay in startup of the Salt Waste Processing Facility.
