Trump (almost) ready to announce VP pick; Pence the favorite

WASHINGTON — Donald Trump was on the verge of announcing his vice presidential pick Thursday, with Indiana Gov. Mike Pence emerging as the late favorite. But advisers cautioned that Trump had not made a final decision and could still change his mind.
Trump and his yet-to-be-announced running mate were scheduled to make their first joint appearance Friday in New York, an event timed to energize Republicans ahead of next week's party convention in Cleveland.

 

5 teens, expectant mom charged in attack

Five teens and an expectant mother are facing charges after police say they attacked a new mother outside a pediatric office last month.
According to a Richmond County Sheriff’s Office incident report, deputies were called to Pediatric Partners on D’Antignac Drive about 3 p.m. June 15 to handle a fight involving several women.

Corporate battle over TV station ownership ends with hefty fine

The corporate battle over the control of the Augusta area television stations will end within 30 days when Media General, which owns ABC-affiliated station WJBF, pays $700,000.
The payment is Media General’s settlement of an Federal Communication Commission investigation of its actions to try to stop corporate rival Schurz Communications from selling the NBC-affiliated station WAGT.

Mickelson shoots 63 at Troon

 
TROON, Scotland — Phil Mickelson has become the 26th player in major championship history to shoot a 63.
And he had reason to be disappointed.
His 16-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Royal Troon caught the right lip and rode the edge of the cup without dropping. Mickelson stooped over and grabbed his knees in disbelief.

 

Dollar General holdup suspect charged

A 25-year-old man has been charged with the Tuesday armed robbery of Dollar General on Deans Bridge Road.
Deputies were called to the store at 3250 Deans Bridge Road about 9:10 a.m. after a man with a gun demanded cash. A witness last saw him running toward Villa Marie apartments. Police set up a perimeter and brought K-9s to track his scent. The suspect was not arrested until the following day.

The Peach Orchard Road on-ramp to westbound Bobby Jones Expressway blocked due to over overturned tractor trailer has reopened.

 

Suspects sought in $6,000 theft

Richmond County sheriff’s deputies are asking the public’s help in identifying three suspects linked to the theft of more than $6,000 worth of cell phones and iPods from the Wal-Mart on Deans Bridge Road.

According to a police bulletin, the three men who appeared to be in their mid-20s entered the store at 1:18 a.m. Tuesday, concealed the items in their clothing and left without paying. They drove away in a white four-door vehicle.

Jefferson plane crash parts still missing

LOUISVILLE, Ga. -- Searchers combing Jefferson County in recent weeks have found much of the wreckage of the two F-16 fighter jets that crashed last month.
Two larger objects, however, have eluded them -- a pilot’s ejection seat and a windshield canopy.
“Keep in mind that these items may be disfigured from the crash,” an Air Force spokesman said. “If you find anything you believe may be aircraft wreckage, please call 911 and relay the description and location of the items.”

 

Interstate slowdown in Columbia County

Expect slowdowns on westbound Interstate 20 in Columbia County today as crews conduct maintenance work.
The left lane from mile marker 181.5 to 183.5 will be closed while crews on site. Work is scheduled to conclude about 3:30 p.m. today.

 

Truck driver pleads guilty in accident that killed 5 coeds

 
 
 
PEMBROKE, Ga. — A Louisiana truck driver charged in a fiery interstate crash in Georgia that killed five nursing students last year pleaded guilty Thursday to nine counts, including five counts of first-degree vehicular homicide.
 
A judge sentenced 56-year-old John Wayne Johnson to five years in prison, plus five on probation. He would have faced up to 93 years if convicted at trial.
 
The sentence was part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
