Incident at Murphey Middle school

A “disciplinary incident” involving a pupil took place Thursday afternoon at Murphey Middle School, the Richmond County School System confirmed Friday, but a spokesman said he could not make details public.
Kaden Jacobs said the school system could not comment because of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, which is intended to protect the privacy of education information and records.
He did say there was a “disciplinary incident” that occurred Thursday afternoon at the school on Bungalow Road.

 

One dead in Graniteville fire

Firefighters found one person dead inside a Graniteville home Friday afternoon.
Aiken County sheriff’s deputies and Graniteville Fire Department firefighters responded to the home at 38 Oakwood Drive around noon and found the home fully engulfed.
The name of the victim has not been released and the investigation is ongoing.

 

Authorites investigate gunplay report

Authorities continue to investigate gunshots reported Thursday afternoon in a neighborhood near the Richmond-Columbia County line.
Deputies were first called to Brookfield Parkway about 1:30 p.m. after residents reported hearing shots and seeing a black SUV driving recklessly around the area.

Exhibit features 1875-1900 Auguta

The Augusta Museum of History unveils tonight a new exhibit: “Augusta, 1875-1900.”
It will explore the life of Augustans in the late Victorian era including daily life, education, transportation, and business history, according to a news release. Museum visitors will be treated to a display of photography portraits, elegant gowns, curious household items, souvenirs from the Augusta Expositions, and stories related from first-person perspectives.

 

#UGA hashtag creates Twitter storm

ATHENS, Ga. — The popular online social networking service Twitter has created some confusion for, and drawn no small amount of ire from, fans and supporters of the University of Georgia.
In connection with the Olympics, Twitter has begun attaching an image of the Ugandan flag to the hashtag #UGA, a piece of text used frequently to attract attention to Twitter messages dealing with the University of Georgia.

Suspect in July 4 Riverwalk shooting denied bond

Bond was denied Friday for a man accused of wounding a couple strapping their 2-year-old into his stroller on the Riverwalk at the conclusion of the July 4 fireworks show.
Clinton L. Coleman, 30, faces charges of aggravated assault, theft by receiving, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the Riverwalk shooting.

Ga. dad charged in twins' deaths

CARROLLTON, Ga. — A Georgia father has been arrested in the deaths of 15-month-old twin girls found in a hot car outside Atlanta, authorities said.

Asa North, 24, of Carrollton was arrested early Friday, local news outlets reported. North is charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of reckless conduct, Carroll County jail records show.

Someone discovered the twins unresponsive in the back seat of an SUV parked in front of a duplex Thursday night, Carrollton police said.

 

Burned worker sent to Still burn center

KINARDS, S.C. — Emergency officials say a Laurens County plant employee has been rushed to an Augusta burn center after suffering severe burns at the facility.

Local news agencies report that Lauren County EMS officials say incident happened Thursday afternoon at Norbord Industries in Kinards.

The unidentified victim was airlifted in critical condition to the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital in Augusta.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — A family friend is asking for thoughts and prayers for an 11-year-old South Carolina girl hospitalized after contracting a usually deadly brain-eating amoeba.
 
Kate Olin said in a statement Thursday on behalf of Hannah Collins’ family to The Beaufort Gazette the family appreciates the tremendous outpouring of love and support they’ve received.
 

 

Officials say River Watch upgrades are good use of Transportation Investment Act funds

They’re causing lane closures and headaches now, but millions in Transportation Investment Act spending is enhancing safety and interconnectedness for commuters on River Watch Parkway, officials said at a Thursday meeting.
Tim Knight, a project manager for HDR construction, said the River Watch projects were “his favorite” among the many funded by the regional transportation sales tax. “Citizens, as they travel through there, they’ve gained the most,” he said.
