Mosquito patrol tries new techniques

The mosquito problem on Au­gusta’s Morris Street is nothing new.
Richmond County Mosquito Control officials say it started more than a decade ago when elderly homeowners stopped maintaining their property. Help arrived Monday when mosquito fighters showed up with a thermal fogger, hoping to provide the neighborhood with a little relief.
Thermal foggers are used only in the most extreme cases of mosquito infestation, special projects manager Fred Koehle said.

 

New Augusta Public Transit software will gather, share data

New real-time tracking technology will keep Augusta Public Transit riders better informed and better served, the city transit director said.
Hardware and software upgrades going for Augusta Commission committee approval today will enable transit staffers to collect data on bus locations and ridership while communicating precise location information to passengers, through onboard signs and annunciators in addition to a mobile app, Director Patrick Stephens said.

 

Missing child sought

A missing child has been reported to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a news release, Toniishia Kaylica Gordon, 11, was last seen about 10:20 a.m. Monday in the 1800 block of Cooney Circle.
She is described as 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighing 170 pounds. She was last seen wearing a gray Aeropostale T-shirt with pink writing on the front, multi-colored shorts and no shoes.

 

Public invited to meet sheriff, deputies

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office invites the public to enjoy a free burger and milkshake on Saturday while meeting local deputies and Sheriff Richard Roundtree.
The sheriff’s office’s Burgers and Shakes event is in its third year. It will be held 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Warren Road Community Center, 300 Warren Road.
The opportunity allows the public to meet the staff, ask questions and give comments.

 

Meth seized; woman arrested

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Division arrested Kisha Kawanda McCladdie, 41, on Sunday afternoon at 3551 Mike Padgett Highway (Augusta Manor Apartments) and charged her with trafficking methamphetamine.
A spokesman said the arrest stemmed from an ongoing methamphetamine investigation and deputies seized approximately 7 pounds of crystal methamphetamine with a street value of $150,000.
The Sheriff’s Office expects more arrest to follow as the investigation continues, the spokesman said.
 

 

Damage to Martinez ballfield

Columbia County sheriff’s deputies are investigating damage at the Martinez Evans Little League property on Collins Drive.
Deputies were called to Crawford Creek Park, 1475 Collins Drive, on Friday. According to an incident report, the park had not been used in about two weeks.
Deputies observed that one arm of the front gate was completely snapped off as if it had been rammed. Plywood used to cover the concession stand doors had also been damaged, and banners on the doors had been ripped.

 

Aiken County motorcyclist dies after wreck

A motorcyclist died Sunday one day after wrecking on Jefferson Davis Highway.
South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said the motorcyclist, who has not been identified, was traveling on Jefferson Davis Highway near Duncan Road about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when he lost control and struck the rear of a 2007 Ford traveling in the same direction of travel. The driver of the Ford was not injured in the collision.
The motorcycle driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was transported to Augusta University where he died Sunday.

 

Deputy frees dog locked in vehicle

A Columbia County deputy had to use a lock-out kit to save a dog that had been locked in a hot car at a restaurant parking lot.
A deputy was called to Cracker Barrel, 460 Park West Drive, about 12:30 p.m. Sunday for a complaint about a dog being left in a hot car. According to an incident report, the deputy made an attempt to locate the vehicle owner inside the restaurant but was unsuccessful. The deputy wrote that the dog appeared to be in distress due to the vehicle not running and all doors and windows closed.

 

Outage grounds Delta flights

Delta Air Lines has grounded flights scheduled to leave today after experiencing unspecified issues with its computer systems globally.

Confirmation of troubles came in an official account that responds to customers via Twitter. The airline declined to immediately comment by phone and it was unclear whether all its flights were affected.

Suspect sought for Wal-Mart theft

A suspect is sought for allegedly stealing 48 items Saturday from Wal-Mart.
Deputies say Robert Jason Buckner, 35, was seen placing more than 40 pieces of kid’s clothing inside a plastic tote and then attempted to leave through the garden entrance of Wal-Mart on Wrightsboro Road. According to an incident report, when Buckner was approached by security he fled to a vehicle and drove toward North Leg Road.
