Wreck kills Jackson man, 90; injures wife, 91

A 90-year-old Jackson man was pronounced dead at Augusta University Medical Center Thursday night, and his wife, 91, remained in critical condition after an Aiken County traffic accident.
According to a statement from Coroner Tim Carlton, Parks Ledford had been a passenger in a 2006 Buick driven by his wife Ruby Ledford.
Mrs. Ledford failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of Tisdale Street and Atomic Road in Jackson about 3:11 p.m. and the Buick was struck by an oncoming 2008 Ford Econoline Van work truck.

 

Sheriff's office completes its triple crown

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday it has been awarded the rare third jewel in the Triple Crown of law enforcement.
The award was established by the National Sheriff’s Association to recognize sheriff’s offices that achieve simultaneous accreditation from the Commission on the Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the American Correctional Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections (ACA) and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare (NCCHC).

 

Sheriff's deputy resigns after domestic incident

A Richmond County sheriff’s deputy arrested during a domestic dispute last week has resigned, officials confirmed Thursday.
Danafrey Clanton, who has been with the department five years, was on administrative leave since his Saturday arrest while internal affairs reviewed his case. The 28-year-old deputy submitted his resignation letter Wednesday.

Lawnmower theft leads to two-state police chase

Two men led police on a two-state chase this morning after stealing a lawnmower from North Augusta.
North Augusta Public Safety Lt. Tim Thornton said police were called after someone saw the men in a pickup truck stealing a lawnmower and trailer from a home on Jackson Avenue around 7 a.m.
North Augusta police located the vehicle and chased it into Georgia.

Armed man robs Deans Bridge store

Police are seeking an armed bandit who stole cash from a Deans Bridge Road Dollar General on Wednesday evening.
An employee at the store, located at 2549 Deans Bridge Road, told police she was in the office counting money about 8 p.m. when she noticed a man walking around in the store. According to the report, the employee had already locked the doors after making sure no customers were inside.

VA hospital phones still malfunction

 
 
The Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center continues to experience telephone problems.
According to a news release, callers might be unable to reach operators or the call center to make appointments. This is a continuation of an issue following an upgrade to the system Friday, Aug. 5. We are working with the contractor to fix the issue, officials said.
If there is an emergency, callers are asked to hang up and dial 911.

 

SC school official fined for giving wife $90K job

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The Beaufort County School District Superintendent has admitted to two state ethics violations resulting in a public reprimand and fine after his wife was hired for a $90,000-a-year district position.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports Jeff Moss said his involvement in the hiring was “inadvertent and unintentional.”

New Scouts may get fishing rods

The Boy Scouts of America’s Georgia-Carolina Council has partnered with Cabela’s to give away a free rod-and-reel to all who register this fall to become new members of a Scouting unit in the Augusta area.
According to a news release, the theme of the promotional campaign sponsored by the outdoor retailer is “Get Hooked on Scouting” and applies only to new scouts who turn in a completed application with registration fee.

 

Macy's to close 100 stores nationwide

NEW YORK — Macy’s says it plans to close about 100 stores next year as the department store operator aims to become more nimble in a competitive market. That represents close to 14 percent of its store base.

The closures come as Macy’s reported today that second-quarter profits and sales fell. The results, however, beat Wall Street estimates as efforts to bring back customers are taking hold.

City adminstrator's evaluation still on hold

More than 21 months on the job, Augusta City Administrator Janice Allen Jackson hasn’t had an evaluation by the Augusta Commission, and now some commissioners are questioning the process.
Jackson’s contract calls for an annual review by the commission prior to adopting the annual city budget, based on goals set by her and the commission for her job performance.
