USSSA World Military Softball Tournament comes to Augusta this weekend

The largest military softball tournament in the world comes to Augusta this weekend for a big athletic and economic boost to the area.
The USSSA World Military Softball Tournament will be held at Diamond Lakes Regional Park and Fort Gordon’s softball complexThursday-Sunday. Sanctioned by the United States Specialty Sports Association, the tournament is in its 15th year, including its first in Augusta.

Michaux: Bronze medal 'personal' for Olympian with Aiken ties

Phillip Dutton has been selected to ride in every Olympics and World Equestrian Games since 1994, so he’s known his share of success including two team gold medals with Australia in the Atlanta and Sydney Games.
Dutton, however, called Tuesday’s bronze medal for three-day eventing as an American in Rio “personal,” and not just because it was his first individual medal in six Olympics.

Chancellor to retire at end of year

University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby, who helped push through the consolidation of universities in Augusta that eventually became Augusta University, announced today he will be retiring at the end of the year.
In a statement released by the system, Huckaby said he will step down Dec. 31 after having served as Chancellor for more than five years.

Authorities update Sunday home invasion

 
Authorities say at least one home invasion suspect was shot by either himself or his accomplice during an incident early Sunday.
Deputies were called to an apartment on Curry Street about 6:20 a.m. following a report of gunshots. The 54-year-old resident said she was on the sofa watching television when someone kicked in her front door and stated, “This is revenge.” Shots were fired and then the man left.

 

Missing Missouri girl could be in Augusta

The Springfield Missouri Police Department is asking for help in locating a missing 16-year-old girl authorities believe may be headed to Augusta.
Jacquelyn Alway was last seen in Springfield on Aug. 5. According to a news release, she may be in the company of an unknown adult male that could be traveling to Augusta. Jacquelyn is 5-foot-7 and weighs 160 pounds. She could be wearing black rimmed glasses and may have dyed her hair, according to authorities.

 

Man arrested after SWAT team called

A Hephzibah man was arrested Tuesday after he refused to leave a residence from which he was being evicted and the Sheriff’s Office SWAT team had to be called.
According to a news release, Robert Lee Simpson, 50, balked when Richmond County marshals served an eviction notice at 2797 Davis Mill Road. He also threatened to shoot any law enforcement officers that tried to remove him.

Olympian with Aiken ties wins bronze medal in eventing

 
Phillip Dutton, an Australian-turned-American who trains in Aiken during the winter, won his first individual equestrian medal in his sixth Olympics, taking the bronze medal in eventing for the United States.
Dutton, who rallied from 15th place after dressage with a nearly flawless cross country run Monday on Mighty Nice, made it through two jumping runs Tuesday with only a one-point time penalty in the morning and a four-point fault in the afternoon to rally for the bronze.

 

Augusta VA phone problems continue

 
 
 
Phone problems continue for Augusta’s Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.
The hospital sent out an alert this morning that it is experiencing problems with phone calls from outside the hospital not reaching operators today.
Some problems were reported on Monday, and the system was being worked on Friday, as well.
“We regret the inconvenience this may cause to our veterans, their families or others calling, during this time,” the hospital said in a statement.

 

Tech AD to Purdue

 
 
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Georgia Tech Athletic Director Mike Bobinski will leave Atlanta to take on the same role at Purdue University, it was announced today.
According to the Purdue Web site, Bobinski will become the northern Indiana university’s new director of Intercollegiate Athletics. He has held the same position at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 2013, as well as the University of Akron and Xavier University previously.
