Police search house after teens gunned down near Atlanta

ATLANTA — Detectives searched a house Wednesday as police investigated the gunshot deaths of two teenagers whose bodies were found behind a grocery store.
Officers executed a search warrant at the home in nearby Cobb County, about three miles from the Publix store where a delivery driver found the bodies of the boy and girl before dawn on Monday, Roswell police Det. Zachary Frommer said.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Pass-rush help for the Atlanta Falcons is on the way.
Veteran linebacker Dwight Freeney was the talk of the Falcons' training camp on Wednesday, a day after agreeing to a one-year deal with the team. Freeney, who is expected to arrive Thursday, is an important addition to a defense that ranked last in the league in sacks last season.
Coach Dan Quinn said Freeney, 36, will play in nickel packages as a pass-rush specialist. Freeney played a similar role with Arizona last season.

 

Top SC Dem asks Haley, McMaster to withdraw Trump support

 
COLUMBIA —   South   Carolina's   top state House Democrat doubled down Wednesday on his call for top elected Republicans to withdraw their support of Donald Trump.
Alternatively, state Rep. Todd Rutherford said, Gov. Nikki Haley and Lt. Gov. Henry McMaster must tell the state's voters if they still plan to vote for the GOP nominee, given several days of events that have some within Trump's own party questioning his candidacy.

 

Aiken County authorities seeking help in finding burglar

 
Aiken County police need help identifying a man caught on camera breaking into a Wagener home.
A homeowner called police about 2:40 p.m. Monday to report a burglary at his home on Buckboard Road. The caller told police he had received an alarm alert and was watching through his surveillance cameras while an unknown man burglarized his home. When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they discovered damage to a rear door. The burglar had already fled, taking several items with him.

 

Arrest made in Warrenton homicide

The GBI and Warrenton Police Department have made an arrest in connection with a homicide that occurred on the 300 block of Depot Street in Warrenton on Sunday.
Martavius Hall, 30, of Warrenton, has been charged with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in the shooting death of 31-year-old Jowonzia Ivey. According to a news release from GBI spokesman Pat Morgan, Hall is currently being held at the McDuffie County Detention Center.

 

Augusta getting 100 used voting machines from Colorado county

Colorado’s switch to voting by mail is Augusta’s gain as Adams County, Colo., donates 100 surplus Diebold TSX voting machines to Richmond County Board of Elections.
Elections Executive Director Lynn Bailey said a former Columbus, Ga., elections staffer who transferred to Colorado discovered 700 unwanted units there, available to anyone willing to pay shipping and license transfer fees.

Georgia Welcome Center reopens

The Augusta Welcome Center was reopened Tuesday after being closed several days due to a water issue.
The Georgia Department of Transportation closed the welcome center on Thursday as a result of a damaged waterline. Crews worked throughout the weekend for make repairs.

 

Augusta University names Howell new head baseball coach

Augusta University announced its sixth head baseball coach in program history Tuesday.
Athletic director Clint Bryant introduced Chris Howell as the next Jaguars coach during a news conference at the Wellness Center on Augusta’s Health Sciences Campus.
“This is a day you dream of, and the opportunity here in Augusta is growing,” Howell said. “The university is very supportive and I’m just happy to be a part of it. It’s a dream come true for me.”

 

Gibson man faces sex charges

A Glascock County man is facing several sex charges after an investigation begun last month.
The charges against Dusty Allan Bland, 600 block of West Main Street, include aggravated sodomy and aggravated child molestation, said Chief Deputy Jeremy Kelley, of the Glascock County Sheriff’s Office.
A deputy was called to the Bland residence July 11 after a complaint from a juvenile.

Richmond pupils see red carpet return

 
While cleaning out the art room last week, Angie Sheahan - principal of Tutt Middle School - noticed a rolled up carpet in the storage room.
It was 50-feet long, unopened and happened to be red.
“I immediately thought, ‘We have to use this,’” Sheahan said.
And that’s exactly what the second-year principal did. In honor of Richmond County’s first day of school Tuesday, Tutt Middle gave its students a movie-star entrance, as nearly 500 pupils exited school busses to witness the surprise.
