Warrenton man dead in shooting

A Warrenton man is dead following an early morning shooting in the city limits.
Warren County Coroner Paul Lowe says 31 year old Jowonzia Demon Ivey of the 200 block of Hudson Street in Warrenton was pronounced dead at University Hospital Mcduffie this morning.
Ivey was reportedly shot at the intersection of Hudson Street and Depot Street around 3:40 a.m. Sunday.
Agents with the GBI Thomson office are investigating.
 

 

I-20 eastbound lane to close at canal

 
South Carolina-bound Monday motorists could see delays as roadwork will close one eastbound lane of Interstate 20 at the bridge over the Augusta Canal.
According to an advisory by the Georgia Department of Transportation, a bridge crew will repair an identified spot on the surface deck.

losure will begin around 8:30 a.m. Monday, and will last until the deck is fully repaired.

 

Local law enforcement evaluate body cams

 
After a year of use, both the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and the North Augusta Department of Public Safety have learned the true strengths and weaknesses of police body cameras.
Both agencies agree that if they work like they’re supposed to, they are invaluable to a police officer in today’s world.
“They’ve been combat tested now,” sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins said of the department’s cameras. “The cameras have gotten a little worse for the wear.”

 

Renovated Laney High holds dedication ceremony

 
Jennette Williams admitted Saturday during the dedication of the newly renovated Lucy C. Laney High School that she had doubts this day would come.
The school had been closed for two years as it underwent a $23 million renovation. But the 1970 Laney alum was all smiles as she held the hand of her 6-year-old granddaughter, Sydney, while they toured the main building.

 

Hot temps increase worries about children left alone in cars

 
Despite continual warnings by police and child advocates, the number of children dying in hot cars is already close to surpassing last year with five months left in 2016.
So far this year, 23 children nationwide have died from heatstroke-related symptons as a result of being left in a car. That’s only one less than the total for 2015. Augusta-area police said there haven’t been any local hot car deaths.

 

Grovetown woman's death being investigated

Grovetown police and the county coroner are investigating the death of an elderly woman at an East Robinson Avenue residence.
Columbia County Corner Vernon Collins said a 78-year-old woman died at the house at 2:34 p.m. He said her death was suspicious and under investigion.
He has ordered an autopsy, but said he can’t comment on the nature of the death until the results are returned.

 

Labor department launches probe of city government for fair labor standards violations

The U.S. Department of Labor has launched an audit of Augusta departments for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
City Administrator Janice Allen Jackson informed department heads in a Thursday memo the audit involves all employees, both those exempt and not exempt from overtime pay, but excluding those working under elected officials.

Crash at mobile home park

A vehicle crashed into a trailer at Rae’s Creek Mobile Home Park off Gordon Highway a little after 5 p.m. Friday afternoon.
When police arrived at 310 Michelle Way, they found the driver unresponsive and not breathing. They believe a medical condition caused the crash.
