Still no ID on body found Friday

The Richmond County Coroner’s Office was able to determine a decomposed body discovered in a home on Friday was a black male, but a positive identification will require dental records.
“We got pretty close, but we couldn’t say for sure,” Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said of the man’s identification.
A pre-demolition crew looking at a home at 1539 Wilder Street discovered the body about 9 a.m. Friday. Boose said that judging from the clothing and the state of decomposition the body had likely been there since winter.

 

Ga. man, stolen gun in Pa. theater

MONACA, Pa. — A Georgia man is jailed on charges he brought a stolen gun and ammunition into a western Pennsylvania movie theater.

Twenty-one-year-old William Gossett, of Covington, was arraigned Sunday on charges of receiving stolen property and carrying an unlicensed firearm stemming from his arrest Saturday evening at the Cinemark Theater in Center Township. That’s in Beaver County, about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh.

 

Clemson picked to win ACC again

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Clemson and quarterback Deshaun Watson are the preseason picks for Atlantic Coast Conference favorite and player of the year.
The reigning champion Tigers were picked on 144 of 191 votes released Monday from media members attending last week’s league media days. Atlantic Division rival Florida State was second with 39 votes, while Coastal Division favorite North Carolina was picked on seven.

2 dead, 17 injured in Fla. nightclub shooting

 
 
 
 
FORT MYERS, Fla. — A shooting at a Florida nightclub early this morning killed two people and wounded as many as 17, police said. The attack apparently occurred at a teen party, billed as a “Swimsuit Glow Party,” at Club Blu in Fort Myers, according to local media.
 

 

Chief appraiser's contract, tax-exempt properties raise questions

Five church-affiliated properties worth more than $13 million but paying no property taxes are at the center of an ongoing Augusta Commission shake-up of the Richmond County Board of Assessors.
Commissioners met for an hour Tuesday behind closed doors on issues with the board but took no action. Late Friday, Mayor Hardie Davis called for a 9 a.m. commission meeting Monday to discuss “personnel.”

Martinez man, 77, drowns in Aiken fishing pond

An early afternoon fishing accident has killed a Martinez  man.
Howard Seymore, 77, was pronounced dead, according to Aiken Coroner Tim Carlton.
The coroner said it appeared that Seymore and a friend were fishing on the bank of the pond near 660 Ridge Road when Seymore's fishing line became entangled on debris in the water.
He got into a canoe and paddled out to the entanglement. As he attempted to dislodge the line,  the canoe tipped over and Seymore was thrown into about 6 feet of water where he drowned.

 

Augusta homicides up, but no cases recently

Although Augusta homicides are up compared with this time last year, police say they believe a two-month absence of any is proof that some of their crime initiatives are paying off.
Augusta has had 14 homicides in 2016. Last year at this time, it had 10.

Clinton names Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as running mate

ORLANDO, Florida — Hillary Clinton named Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as her vice presidential running mate Friday, adding a centrist former governor of a crucial battleground state to the Democratic ticket.
In a text message to supporters, the presumptive Democratic nominee said, "I'm thrilled to tell you this first: I've chosen Sen. Tim Kaine as my running mate."

 

8 dead in Munich mall shooting; police hunt up to 3 suspects

MUNICH — Police hunted for an unknown number of gunmen who opened fire in a Munich shopping mall and at a McDonald's across the street Friday, killing eight people and wounding others in a rampage they described as suspected terrorism. Authorities urged residents to remain inside and put the Bavarian capital on lockdown.

 

Bond granted in child abuse case

A 22-year-old Augusta man facing child abuse charges in the injuries suffered by his 2-month-old son was granted a $15,000 bond Friday.
Johnny Hairston was arrested July 1 on a charge of cruelty to children in the first degree. A condition of his bond is not to have any contact with the baby, Senior Judge Albert M. Pickett said Friday in Richmond County Superior Court.
