Chris Sizemore, '3 Faces of Eve' subject, dies

 
 
 
Christine “Chris” Costner Sizemore, 89, the Edgefield County woman whose challenge with multiple personalities inspired the book and movie Three Faces of Eve, died Sunday in an Ocala, Fla., hospice, according to a Greenwood funeral home.
Her story led to a book by two Augusta psychiatrists focusing on Sizemore’s struggle, and became a movie for which a young Georgia actress named Joanne Woodward won an academy award.

 

Youngster sought after burglary

Police are seeking a boy for questioning in the early morning burglary of a Wheeless Road business.
The boy, who police said is likely a teenager, was seen approaching Augusta Petroleum Equipment, 2254 Wheeless Road, this morning just before the burglary. He is described as having lighter color highlights in the back of his hair.

Charleston heat too hot for horses

CHARLESTON, S.C. — Charleston will review city rules on the treatment of carriage horses and mules after receiving dozens of complaints about the animals working in the heat this summer.

Dan Riccio the director of the city’s Department of Livability and Tourism tells The Post and Courier the city received about 50 complaints in June and July in a year when the weather has been hotter than usual.

 

Area colleges seeing enrollment growth in nuclear industry fields

Thousands of well-paid nuclear workers at places such as Savannah River Site and Plant Vogtle will be retiring in the next decade.
Whether those jobs are filled by local applicants or people from elsewhere depends largely on how well area colleges prepare the next generation of Augusta-Aiken workers.
The good news, regional workforce officials say, is that area institutions are off to a great start.

2 San Diego cops shot; 1 dies

SAN DIEGO — One police officer has died and another remains in surgery after being shot in a San Diego neighborhood, authorities said early Friday.

The San Diego Police Department gave an update on the officers on its Twitter account, but offered no additional details.

There was no immediate word on what touched off the violence, which occurred around 11 p.m. PDT Thursday in the southeastern part of town.

Police searched the area for suspects and urged residents to stay indoors.

 

City holds talks on housing violation 'disconnect'

 
Augusta officials are narrowing in on a fix for the city’s problem with unkempt residential properties – only some of which is tied to heavy use of Section 8 vouchers.
Augusta Commission members, appointed officials and the Augusta Housing Authority met jointly Thursday for the first time in several years to look for ways to address what the public often assumes is tied to subsidized housing.
“We’re all ears,” authority Chairman Rodger Murchison said at the meeting. “Sharing information” is key to the effort, he said.

 

Water issue closes Ga. welcome center

The Augusta Welcome Center on westbound Interstate 20 was closed Thursday afternoon because of a water main issue.
The public will not have access to the building, but can still enter its parking lots, according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Transportation.
The source of the problem has not been determined, a DOT spokesman said.

 

First pretrial hearing set for former Aiken man accused of killing priest

Next month, the man accused of killing a Florida priest in Burke County will have the first of a series of hearings required in death penalty prosecutions.
Steven J. Murray, 28, will be able to enter his plea to charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime on Aug. 15 in Burke County Superior Court.
Murray is accused of fatally shooting 71-year-old Rev. Rene Robert of St. Augustine, Fla., sometime between April 10 and 18, according to the indictment.

 

Deans Bridge wreck kills 2

 
Two people died after a driver ran a stop sign this morning on Deans Bridge Road.
Chief Deputy Coroner Kenneth Boose said the driver of one vehicle died at the scene of the crash at Deans Bridge Road in Blythe. Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Monica Belser said the passenger in the same vehicle died at AU Medical Center emergency room at 9:15 a.m.

 

North Augusta woman prays with police each morning

 
This morning, as she has done every morning this week, Daisy Harris will drive to the North Augusta Department of Public Safety to pray with the officers.
At 6 a.m., as the night-shift leaves and the day-shift comes to work, she’ll bow her head and wait for inspiration.
“I close my eyes and listen to the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit brings up the words,” the 70-year-old self-described evangelist said Wednesday.
