Home intruder shot and killed

A 39-year-old Augusta man was fatally shot early this morning when a homeowner found him breaking into a Wrightsboro Road residence, the Richmond County coroner says.
The dead man was identified as Anthony James Lawson, of the 3000 block of Deans Bridge Road Augusta, Coroner Mark Bowen said in a news release. He was shot at a residence on the 2400 block of Wrightsboro Road and pronounced dead at 3:38 a.m.

Clinton may have 'fainted' at 9-11 ceremony

 
 
NEW YORK — Hillary Clinton unexpectedly left Sunday’s 9/11 anniversary ceremony in New York after feeling “overheated,” according to her campaign, and retreated to her daughter’s nearby apartment. As she exited the apartment shortly before noon, Clinton said, “I’m feeling great.”
 
Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement that the Democratic presidential nominee attended the morning ceremony for 90 minutes “to pay her respects and greet some of the families of the fallen.
 

 

Burglar caught inside closed store

An Augusta teen is facing burglary charges after a deputy found him hiding in the back of the Family Dollar store, 2258 Wrightsboro Road, that had closed for the night.
Isaiah N. Bush, 18, of the 2500 block of Kennedy Circle, was jailed on second-degree burglary charges.

Bandits take $2,000 neck chain

An Augusta man told deputies he was robbed Friday morning of a gold rope chain valued at $2,000 and $70 in cash when a man displaying a knife got into his vehicle on Central Avenue.
The victim, 48, told authorities he was getting out of his SUV about 9 a.m. at 1905 Central Avenue when he was approached by a man possibly in his 30s who showed him the knife and got into the car. A second man quickly joined them and he was forced to drive around the corner where the men took his 14-karat rope chain from his neck and his cash from the vehicle console.

 

3 to hospital after Broad Street accident

Two people were hospitalized with injuries Saturday after a vehicle swerved off the 500 block of Broad Street and struck a man and his wife eating at a sidewalk table in front of the Sports Center.
According to a spokeswoman for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph Howell, 67, and his wife Renee Howell, 58, were at a sidewalk table in front of 594 Broad Street when they were struck by a vehicle driven by Boyce Williams, 57.

Downtown plan update called starting point

A sweeping update to Augusta’s redevelopment plan for downtown appeared on the scene last week.
The public has only two opportunities – review meetings scheduled Wednesday and Thursday – to weigh in, and can provide written comment through Sept. 26. The plan’s primary author said the draft is merely a starting point.

UGA nips Nicholls State 26-24

ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia scored two quick-strike touchdowns — one on offense, one on defense — in a span of about two minutes after Nicholls took a third-quarter lead, and the No. 9 Bulldogs escaped with an uninspiring 26-24 win over the Colonels on Saturday.
 
Georgia (2-0) opened the game with a fast touchdown drive capped by Nick Chubb’s 6-yard run and appeared headed for the easy win over the FCS Colonels that was widely expected in Kirby Smart’s home debut as coach.
 

 

Man, 23, found fatally shot on 2nd Avenue

A 23-year-old Augusta man was found fatally shot early today on Second Avenue.
Eugene Brown Jr.., 2300 block of Franklin Street, had been shot at least once, Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said.
The body was found in the roadway just after 3 a.m., and Brown was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said. An autopsy is planned.

 

Hector leads Jefferson County past Washington-Wilkes

LOUISVILLE, Ga. — Searching for weaknesses in a determined Washington-Wilkes defense, Jefferson County’s quarterback tandem found an answer in junior receiver Ja’Darius Hector.
Hector broke open a deadlocked game with a pair of long touchdown receptions of 71 and 36 yards to start and finish the second quarter, then he added another 62-yard score in the thitrd quarter as Jefferson County pulled away to a 38-6 victory over Washington-Wilkes.
