Boy, 4, drowns at Wildwood Park

A 4-year-old Augusta boy drowned Saturday at Wildwood Park in Columbia County.
He was identified as Jace Alan Baker, according to deputy coroner Harriett Garrison.
She said the victim’s family had gone to the park to see a fishing tournament and afterward several of the youngsters were riding bikes to another area of the park then returned.
Jace did not return with them and a search began. His body was soon found in eight feet of water nearby, the coroner said.

 

Sheriff's office alters physical training tests

 
The Richmond County Sher­iff’s Office is adjusting its physical training assessment to account for an officer’s age and sex.
The memo on policy changes was sent to the staff in mid-July to the delight of officers, who will face testing in October or November. Capt. Bill Probus said the change was a result of input from officers, the advisory board and reviews of test scores.
“The results from the first few years showed a disparity between women and the older folks,” Probus said.

 

Riverfront music venue still low on shows

Augusta’s Jessye Norman Amphi­theater continues to want for shows.
The third event in this year’s “Ri­ver­front Revival” series, an Oct. 6 concert by Yonder Mountain String Band, was recently moved to Sky City because of “unforeseen issues” at the riverfront amphitheater.
City Recreation and Parks Di­rec­tor Glenn Parker said he learned that the issues involve the band’s power requirements for the show.

 

2 arrested in McDuffie clown case

The McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office has charged two persons caught wearing clowns masks and attempting to scare the public.

According to a statement released Friday, the case has been scheduled to be heard in McDuffie County Magistrate Court on Oct. 20.

There is no evidence that these two persons were involved the incident that occurred in the Davis Circle area of McDuffie County. That incident is still under investigation.

 

Man accused of killing elderly priest pleads not guilty

The man accused of killing an elderly priest in Burke County entered a not guilty plea Friday.
Steven J. Murray, 28, briefly appeared in Burke County Superior Court to enter his plea in the slaying of the Rev. Rene Robert, 71, of St. Augustine, Fla.
Investigators believe Murray fatally shot Robert during a crime spree from Florida to Aiken, between April 10 and 18.
Murray, who is from Aiken, was arrested there after crashing Robert’s vehicle while fleeing from law enforcement officers.

 

2 found dead after Aiken County fire

Two bodies were found this morning when fire crews responded to a blaze in Aiken County.
The victims have not been identified.
According to a statement from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, The fire at 72 Alex Johnson Drive east of Aiken is extinguished and the sheriff’s Forensics Team and the Coroner staff is investigating.

Traffic at River Watch Parkway and Furys Ferry Road was shut down just after 7 a.m. this morning after an accident.

 

Samsung Galaxy faces US recall

 
 
 
BETHESDA, Md. — U.S. regulators issued an official recall of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 phone on Thursday because of a risk of fire.
 
Samsung already has voluntary recalled the devices after a few dozen devices exploded or caught fire. That was out of about 2.5 million phones sold.
 

 

Thomson's Thomas named state player of the week

Thomson’s Michael Thomas earned a statewide honor this week after racking up a high yardage total against a state power.
Georgia High School Football Daily named Thomas as the Georgia Player of the Week for his performance against Pace Academy on Sept. 9.
The senior ran 23 times for 284 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs beat the Knights 38-10 on the road. Thomson moved to 4-0 in the win over Pace Academy, which entered ranked first in Class AAA.

 

Arts festival closing downtown streets

The annual Arts in the Heart festival is closing many streets in downtown Augusta this weekend.
