Human remains found in Georgia woods

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — Police in north Georgia say human remains were found in a wooded area.

Gainesville Police Sgt. Kevin Holbrook tells local news media that human remains of a male were found Friday afternoon. The body had been decomposed and will be sent for an autopsy.

Holbrook says foul play has not been ruled out.

Police are unsure how long the body has been sitting in the area.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is helping with the case.

 

SC kids left in truck with gun

YORK, S.C. — A father who left four children alone in a truck with a gun and a box of bullets hidden under the seats had been sentenced to jail after violating his probation.
 
Prosecutors wanted a longer sentence for Jason Grant. They said he has refused to provide a urine sample for drug testing to his probation agent. After he pleaded guilty to unlawful neglect in June, a possible 10-year prison sentence was suspended.
 

 

Counterfeit money 'rampant' in Augusta

Local police hope the recent arrest of a man found printing thousands of counterfeit bills at his home will help reduce a problem plaguing the area.
Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Josh Faison said local counterfeiting has been “rampant,” with cases reported every day. The problem is just as common in Columbia County.
“It’s just gone buck wild,” Faison said of the issue.

No progress made in child sex assault case

Columbia County police said there has been no update to a case involving a young child sexually assaulted in the woods a month ago.
A woman called the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office on Aug. 3 after her 10-year-old autistic child came home hysterical and told her that a man had done bad things to her.
Police were able to determine that an unknown man had grabbed the girl by the hands near Ridge Crossing apartments and led her into the woods, where he sexually assaulted her. She was able to escape and run home.

 

The Latest: Maryland governor declares emergency for Hermine

REISTERSTOWN, Md. — The Latest on Hermine (all times local):
6:40 p.m.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency for the Eastern Shore and southern Maryland as tropical storm Hermine continues its way north.
Hogan signed the executive order Friday afternoon. It affects Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, Worcester, Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties.
The governor said in a statement that he signed the order in anticipation of heavy rains, strong winds and flooding.

 

Hit and run vehicle that struck two teens in 2014 may have been found

The vehicle that might have been used by a hit-and-run driver who struck two young teens on Gordon Highway in April 2014 may have been found.
According to an affidavit presented to obtain a search warrant, the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office got a tip in April 2016 that lead to the recovery of a 1995 Toyota Corolla.
About 11:40 p.m. on April 13, 2014, Zykeith Harris, 14, and Devontae Sims, now 16, were hit by a vehicle, suspected to be a Toyota, on Gordon Highway at Dan Bowles Road.

 

Augusta man accused of stealing from former employer denied bond

Bond was denied Friday for an Augusta man accused of stealing nearly $5,000 of food, liquor and cigars.
Jesse Williams, 54, is charged with three counts of second-degree burglary.
On Friday in Richmond County Superior Court, Assistant District Attorney Jared Williams, no relation, said that Williams entered the Partridge Inn in July and helped himself to cases of food, beer, expensive wines and cigars.
As a former employee, Williams knew where the key to the kitchen was kept, the prosecutor said.

 

Hermine wet, not so stormy

Rains continue to fall across the region this afternoon, spawned by now Tropical Storm Hermine.
Columbia County Friday rainfall totals through noon averaged about 2 inches at most reporting stations with a high of 2.4 inches at the Crawford Creek Water Plant near Grovetown.

Aiken authorities seek missing woman

 
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in a search for a woman missing from the Trenton area since mid-August.
April Marie Johnson, 44, was last seen on Aug. 16 when she told family members she was going for a walk but never returned. Six days later family members contacted the sheriff’s office to report her missing. Family members said she does suffer from some acute medical conditions. She was last seen wearing a black tank top, black yoga pants and boots.

 

Grovetown home unfit, authorities say

 
Police are investigating after children were found living in roach infesting conditions in Grovetown.
Columbia County sheriff’s deputies were notified of the home’s conditions after a Terminex employee reported he found the home infested with roaches and the living conditions “unbearable.” The man reported to police that all of the bedrooms where the children lived had roach nests and were covered in urine.
