Murder charge in Burke baby death

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged a man with murder after the death of an infant in Waynesboro.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call about 3 p.m. Saturday from William Roger Hillis II in reference to an unresponsive 6-month-old child. Hillis met deputies and EMS on Old Waynesboro Road, where the child was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. On Monday the child died at the hospital as a result of injuries.

 

Wreck blocks I-20 lanes

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 near the state line are blocked due to a collision, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
The crash was reported around mile marker 2 in Aiken County just after 9 a.m. No further details on the crash have been released. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

 

Coroner called to Woodard Avenue

  The Richmond County coroner was called to the 4100 block of Woodard Avenue this morning after a report of a stabbing.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched just after 7 a.m. to the scene in a isolated area near Tobacco Road.
A body appeared to be lying in the road in front of a residence that did not appear to be occupied.
 

 

Man accused of killing Florida priest attempts suicide again

Steven James Murray, the man accused of killing a Florida priest, attempted to hang himself Saturday at the Clayton County Jail, officials confirmed.
According to Burke County Sheriff Greg Coursey, Murray was hospitalized after the suicide attempt and later transported back to the Clayton County Jail where he remains on suicide watch.

 

Shepeard will test blood for Zika

Blood coming in to Shepeard Community Blood Center will soon be tested for Zika due to a new guidance issued by the Food and Drug Administration on Friday.
Georgia and South Carolina were among the 11 states that are expected to begin testing in the next month. Previously blood testing was mostly limited to Florida and Puerto Rico. Testing is expected to begin in all states in the next 12 weeks.

Augusta venues' performance backs plan for new arena, supporters say

A fiscal "best year yet" bolsters plans to build a new arena to replace the aging James Brown, backers say.
Spectra by Comcast Spectacor, formerly Global Spectrum, has managed the Augusta Entertainment Complex of James Brown Arena and the Bell Auditorium since 2009, including concessions, hospitality, ticketing and marketing.
For a third year, Spectra reduced the facilities' deficit – while booking 129 events, 33 more than last year – according to an announcement from the company.

 

Richmond Academy-Aiken is latest renewal as Game of the Week

For the second consecutive week, two area teams with a rich history will meet Friday night for the first time in four decades.
Richmond Academy will visit Aiken at Hagood Stadium for the first time since 1975 when the two face off at 7:30 p.m. in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week.
The two teams previously met 14 times between 1951-75, including a string of eight consecutive years between the 1960s and 1970s. The Musketeers own the overall series at 13-1, with the Hornets’ lone win, 12-9, coming in 1972.

 

$75 million master plan going to committee

Augusta’s Public Services Committee has a big - and pricey - decision Tuesday whether to commit as much as $75 million to enhancing recreation and parks.
Under development for about 18 months by local firm Cranston Engineering and several subconsultants, the plan calls for new parks, trails and other upgrades as well as additional plans for individual parks and a five-year plan update.

3 charged with concealing Grovetown woman's death

 
Three people have been charged with concealing the death of an elderly Grovetown woman.
Grovetown Department of Public Safety officers discovered the body of Namie Christy, 78, at her East Robinson Avenue home after receiving a 911 call from one of the suspects on July 29. Investigator Jacob Rambo said authorities are awaiting autopsy results to give more details into her cause of death or how long she had been dead.

 

Hospital releases boy, 2, shot in legs

A 2-year-old shot at his North Augusta home Friday has been released from the hospital, police confirmed today.
Aiken County sheriff’s deputies were called to the home on Hutchinson Drive about 1:30 p.m. to find the child with gunshot wounds to both legs. Lt. Steve Shunn said soon after the incident that the child was at home with family members when the shooting occurred, but more details were not provided due to the pending investigation.
Today Shunn said the investigation continues and addition details are still not available.
