SC job seekers crash Volvo Web site

CHARLESTON, S.C. — It seems a lot of people want to help Volvo build cars at its first auto manufacturing plant in North America.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports that when the company announced last week a slate of job openings for its new $500 million plant northwest of Charleston, thousands of people went online crashing the Berkeley County jobs website.

Ga. woman killed looking at snake

MARYVILLE, Tenn. — Officials say a Georgia woman has been fatally struck by a vehicle after getting out of her car to look at a snake in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee.

Multiple news agencies report that park officials say 64-year-old Shirley Jean Alexander Clifton, of Woodstock, Georgia, was hit by an oncoming car Friday night along Foothills Parkway West near Chilhowee Lake.

Park rangers say Clifton had left her car to look at a snake on the road before she was struck.

 

New restaurant eyes North Augusta site

 
NORTH AUGUSTA -- A Your Pie pizza restaurant could be coming to downtown North Augusta as the first tenant in the revitalized Ming Yat building on Georgia Avenue.
Patrick Landon, whose Bjoland Restaurant Group owns 10 Bojangles restaurants in the Augusta area, announced his intentions in a legal advertisement required to obtain a license for beer and wine consumption on premises.

Rebel flag remover steps forward

 
BRUNSWICK, Ga. -- The person who removed 70 Confederate flags from the graves of Civil War veterans about two weeks ago at Brunswick’s historic Oak Grove Cemetery has stepped forward, and it’s not the usual suspect of vandals or activists.
 
The leader of a local Confederate heritage group had called Brunswick police when he visited the cemetery about two weeks ago and found that 70 of the 78 flags placed on burial sites in April were missing.
 

 

Camera shows man punching bank window

Surveillance footage caught a man punching out a bank window downtown Thursday evening.
Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to Georgia Bank and Trust, 32 Eighth St., early Friday after a lawn care business noticed one of the side windows had been broken out.
A bank representative told police it did not appear that anyone entered the bank, but deputies observed a large amount of blood around the window and down the walkway to Reynolds Street.

 

Deputy's son charged in slaying

The son of a Georgia sheriff’s deputy has been arrested and charged with murder after the shooting and killing of a man in Thomson.
GBI Special Agent in Charge Pat Morgan says Ricquavius Tarver, 22, of Warrenton, the son of Taliaferro County Deputy Ricky Tarver, is facing charges for murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. He is being held at the McDuffie County Detention Center.

Endwell, N.Y. wins Little League World Series

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Ryan Harlost led Endwell, New York, to the Little League World Series title, striking out eight and limiting South Korea to five hits in six innings in a 2-1 victory Sunday.
Endwell became the first U.S. winner since Huntington Beach, California, in 2011, and gave New York its first championship since 1964.
Conner Rush had the New York team's only RBI to give Endwell a lead it wouldn't relinquish in the bottom of the fourth. Harlost (2-0) scored the deciding run on a passed ball a batter later.

 

Kyle Larson takes advantage of late restart for first Cup victory

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Kyle Larson raced to his first Sprint Cup victory Sunday, taking the lead on a restart with nine laps remaining and holding off Chase Elliott at Michigan International Speedway in a duel between two of NASCAR's up-and-coming standouts.
Elliott had a comfortable lead before a tire problem on Michael Annett's car brought out the yellow flag. Larsonhad the better restart and went on to win by 1.48 seconds. Brad Keselowski finished third.

 

Ex-Augusta State star Patrick Reed wins The Barclays, earns spot on Ryder Cup team

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. — Patrick Reed picked up two victories in one day. He won The Barclays to assure himself a clear shot at the $10 million bonus in the FedEx Cup, and he easily secured a spot on his second straight U.S. Ryder Cup team.
Rickie Fowler, with a surprising meltdown, walked away empty from Bethpage Black.
