Thomson man fatally shot Saturday

A Thomson man was killed in a shooting Saturday evening.
Roosevelt Wendell Demmons, 32, was shot at CC’s Car Wash/CDL Dollar Down Auto Sales on East Hill Street, Special Agent Pat Morgan of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m.
The GBI and Thomson police are investigating the shooting. No arrests had been made late Saturday, but authorities are questioning a suspect.

 

Man fatally shot late Friday

A man was fatally shot late Friday on Dugas Street in Augusta.
Lawaun Jermaine Flournoy, 38, had been shot multiple times when authorities found him in the 1000 block of Dugas after responding to a call about 11:30 p.m. Emergency medical technicians pronounced him dead about 12:10 a.m.
No arrests have been made in the shooting. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that an investigation is ongoing. An autopsy was scheduled today at the GBI crime lab in Atlanta.

 

Last-second field goal lifts Aquinas over Laney

 
Crimmins Hankinson’s 44-yard field goal as time expired capped a crazy finish and lifted Aquinas to its first victory, 19-18, over Laney on Friday night at Laney Stadium in a cross-town renewal that waited 41 years.
The Irish (1-1) rallied to set up Hankinson’s kick after the Wildcats scored with 38 seconds left on Mario Sumpter’s 40-yard touchdown pass to K.J. Redfield on fourth-and-12.

 

Hyde Park activist not pleased with city buyout offer

The man who fought to get Augusta to address contamination concerns in the Hyde Park community now is questioning the city’s offer of $90,500 for his four rental properties there.
Hyde Park was long rumored to be contaminated and was marked with signs warning children not to play in the dirt. In 2011, it became the target of a sweeping city buyout, for the stated purpose of creating a 44-acre regional stormwater detention pond.

 

Aiken County motorcycle crash kills 2

 
Two people died when a motorcyclist lost control of the bike in Aiken County.
South Carolina Highway Patrol’s Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said the crash was discovered about 7 a.m. on U.S. Highway 78 near Levels Church Road. The motorcycle was traveling east when the driver apparently lost control and struck the curb. Both driver and passenger were killed. Jones said the passenger was wearing a helmet, but the driver was not.

 

2-year-old shot in North Augusta

 
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the Friday afternoon shooting of a 2-year-old at his North Augusta home.
Lt. Steve Shunn said police were called to the home on Hutchinson Drive at 1:24 p.m. and arrived at 1:30 p.m. to find the child with gunshot wounds to both legs. The child was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Shunn said the child was at home with family members when the shooting occurred. No other details are available as police continue to investigate the incident.

 

Aiken bridge to close on Monday

An Aiken County bridge will be closed to traffic through mid-October starting Monday.
The South Carolina Department of Transportation said a bridge on Silver Bluff Road will be replaced and should be reopened to traffic on Oct. 12.
During construction, traffic will be detoured along Atomic, Dragstrip, Green Pond and Williston roads.

 

Augusta man convicted of misdemeanor vehicular homicide in bicyclist's death

An Augusta man who killed a bicyclist just before dawn on May 15, 2013, was acquitted Friday of felony vehicular homicide charges.
Judge J. David Roper found evidence that Christopher Provost only committed misdemeanor vehicular homicide when he struck 42-year-old Dennis Skillman on the Mike Padgett Highway just north of Tobacco Road. Roper sentenced Provost to one year probation under the First Offender Act.

 

Three arrested for drugs, weapons possession after search of home

Police discovered money, a stolen gun and marijuana after executing a search warrant at an April Drive home Wednesday.
After entering through a barracaded front door, narcotics investigators detected a strong odor of marijuana. They discovered bags of marijuana as well as an assault rifle and .45 caliber handgun and a magazine drum holding 100 rounds of ammunition.

 

3 charged after fight at Augusta apartments leads to stabbing

A 14-year-old and two women are facing charges after a fight resulted in a stabbing at River Glen Apartments on Sunday.
