Second bandit arrested following attempted robbery at Subway

A suspect has been arrested after an armed robbery that turned fatal Sunday at the Subway on Gordon Highway.
About 3 a.m. Monday, Richmond County deputies responded to the Courtyard Marriott – located at 1045 Stevens Creek Road – in reference to a suspicious person. Upon arrival, they encountered Brandon James Simmons, 25, of Durham, N.C., according to Richmond County Lt. Allan Rollins.

 

Aquinas-Laney renewal is area's Game of the Week

Laney’s string of facing unique opponents early in the 2016 season will continue Friday night.
The Wildcats will renew an old Augusta matchup when they play host to Aquinas at 7:30 p.m. in The Augusta Chronicle’s Game of the Week. It marks the first meeting between the two since 1975.

Event for unwanted medications called a success

Police collected 300 pounds of unwanted medications during a drug take back event this weekend.
The event was aimed at helping residents properly dispose of expired or unused prescription drugs. Richmond County Sheriff’s Lt. Allan Rollins called the event a success.
“It filled up the back of the truck,” Rollins said of the medications.

Olympians with UGA ties bring home 10 medals

 
ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia contingent at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games recorded quite a medal haul.
Nine current or former Bulldogs collected 10 medals in Rio, six of them gold. Based on Sunday’s overall medal count, Georgia-connected athletes would rank just below Kenya (11 medals) and just ahead of Croatia (10 medals), although the Bulldogs picked up one more gold medal than either of those countries.

 

Subway worker defending son when she shot bandit, police say

 
Police said a Gordon Highway Subway employee was defending her 14-year-old son when she mortally wounded one of two potential robbers armed with tire irons Sunday afternoon.
Deputies discovered one of the suspects, identified as Cornelius Harrison, 24, of North Carolina, bleeding from his side in the wooded area behind the business. He was taken to Augusta University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The other bandit has not been located.

 

Woman charged in earlier traffic fatality

A Martinez woman has been charged with second-degree homicide by vehicle after a motorcycle crash last month.
Thomas von Ray Carter, 60, of Augusta, died Aug. 3 from injuries sustained in the July 19 crash.
According to a crash report, Carter was traveling north on South Belair Road near the Holly Road intersection on a 2003 HD Ultra motorcycle about 11:51 a.m.

Prices have already been on the increase, but AAA predicts it might continue to rise through the week.
Last week oil prices hit their highest level in more than a month. Prices have risen about 4 cents in Georgia.

Body found in shallow SC grave

PAGELAND, S.C. — Deputies say a body found in Pageland is believed to be that of a woman reported missing last week.

Chesterfield County Sheriff Jay Brooks tell news outlets that the remains were discovered Friday in a shallow grave off a dirt road and may have been there for days.

He says he believes the victim may be 51-year-old Ternetha Ann Bennett, who deputies had been looking for since Aug. 15.

The county’s coroner is working to identify the remains. It’s unclear how the victim died.

 

SC special ed teacher linked to burglaries

SURFSIDE BEACH, S.C. — A Horry County special education teacher has been arrested in connection with a string of burglaries in Surfside Beach.

Surfside Beach police said in a news release Sunday that 45-year-old Bion Legrand Shoemaker III was arrested Thursday and charged with three counts of second-degree burglary to a residence and one count of auto breaking.
