NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol underway after long delay

BRISTOL, Tenn. — The NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway is back under way Sunday after a 3½-hour delay because of heavy rain.
The water-logged race was delayed Saturday night after just 48 laps. NASCAR officials planned to get going again at 1 p.m., but instead more rain washed over the track and kept the drivers in their motorhomes.

Augusta University alumnus places 41st in Rio

Pardon Ndhlovu, an Augusta University alumnus, placed 41st out of 155 competitors Sunday during the Olympic Games marathon in Rio.
Ndhlovu represented Zimbabwe and finished with a time of 2:17:48. Eliud Kipchoge, of Kenya, captured the gold medal with a time of 2:08:44. Feyisa Lilesa (Ethiopia) won silver, while Galen Rupp of the United States took bronze.

Speeding citations and fatalities are down in Richmond County so far this year.
That’s good news to police who hopeit’s a sign that they’re getting their safety message across to the public.
“Some of it is variance, but some of it might be that we’re having an impact,” Richmond County sheriff’s Maj. Steve Strickland said Friday.

Store employee says shoplifter bit him

A 21-year-old Thomson woman was being held in the Richmond County jail Saturday after a Windsor Spring Road business employee said he was bitten while halting a shoplifter.
Arneisha Lashae Burnett, 200 block of Guy Road, was charged, jail records say.
According to a sheriff’s incident report, a woman with a female child paid for some items then left Beauty Expo, 2115 Windsor Spring Road, just before 7 p.m. Friday. An alarm went off at the door and a store employee found several items in the woman’s bag that had not be purchased.

 

Macon man drives to hospital, dies

MACON, Ga. — A Macon man who was shot in the chest has died after driving himself to a nearby hospital.

The Macon Telegraph reports that the 34-year-old Darian Brewster was shot and killed early Saturday.

The Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones tells the newspaper that he was in a Ford Fusion parked on the street when the shooting happened around 3:50 a.m.

Jones says there were other people in the car with Brewster when he was shot but no one else was wounded.

 

Defense sparks North Augusta in season-opening rout of Lakeside

NORTH AUGUSTA — A little rain on North Augusta’s turf didn’t slow down DeJuan Bell and his defensive mates Friday night.
Bell and the Yellow Jackets’ defense set the tone early with multiple interceptions for touchdowns as North Augusta ran away with the season opener over Lakeside, 41-16, at the Jackets Nest.
The two swapped touchdowns on opening possessions, but the close score ended quickly as North Augusta picked off four Lakeside passes in the first half, returning three for touchdowns.

 

Aiken police seeking man using cloned credit card

Aiken police are seeking a man who used a cloned credit card for purchases at Walmart.
According to the Aiken Department of Public Safety, the man used the card at the Richland Avenue store on Aug. 8 to purchase numerous gift cards. The department defined a cloned credit card as a card that has the card number and cardholder information stored on it from a compromised credit card.

3 face meth charges with child present

Three men are facing charges after manufacturing methamphetamine in a south Augusta residence while a child was present.
Jeremy Allen Brown, 39; Jamie Lee Davis, 40; and Brandon Lee Moriarity, 35, were booked into the Richmond County jail Thursday on charges of trafficking methamphetamine, manufacturing methamphetamine, and presence of children during methamphetamine manufacture.

Butt Bridge to close until next year

 
The Archibald W. Butt Memorial Bridge on 15th Street will close to traffic starting Monday through next year.
The closure will allow for contractors to do an upgrade on the historical structure.
