Man slashes sleeping woman's throat

DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. — A man has been arrested after authorities say he slashed a sleeping woman’s throat in Douglas County.

News agencies report Douglas County sheriff’s deputies say 20-year-old Kenny Wayne Oliver was arrested Wednesday in Spartanburg, South Carolina. His exact charges are unknown.

Investigators say Oliver cut Sandy Archey’s neck and hands while she was sleeping in her Douglasville home Aug. 5. She fought him off and he fled.

 

Two arrested in unrelated drug trafficking cases

Two men were arrested in unrelated drug trafficking cases Tuesday.
The first case occurred in the front area of Butler Creek Mobile Home Park on Phinizy Road about 3 p.m. According to an incident report, Rodriquez James Hall, 43. had a bag containing 9 grams of heroin, which he tried to drop on the ground while he spoke with investigators. At one of his relative’s residence, police found a bag containing 102 grams of heroin and another with 78 grams of cocaine.
The homeowner told deputies the drugs belonged to Hall.

 

Crash closes portion of Mike Padgett Highway

A portion of Mike Padgett Highway is expected to be closed for several hours while crews clean the roadway after the collision of two tractor trailers.
Richmond County sheriff’s Sgt. Michael McDaniel said one tractor trailer struck another while attempting to avoid debris about 8 a.m. on Mike Padgett Highway near 4H Club Road. The impact resulted in one tractor trailer overturning, spilling wood chips and diesel fuel onto the roadway.
No one was injured in the crash.

 

Lochte back in US, robbery investigation continues

Fiery Savannah crash kills man, 87

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- An 87-year-old man was killed in a fiery wreck Tuesday morning when his SUV collided with an oncoming car and careened into a pump at a gas station in Savannah, causing an explosion.

Heritage Academy files action to take over Knox Center properties

In a quiet title action filed Monday in Richmond County Superior Court, Heritage claims several deeds issued by the Peter Knox Community Service Center Owners Association break covenants intended to ensure the properties are used for a charitable purpose.

 

Monetta farmer found dead

A farm accident killed a 67 year old Monetta man.
Roger Loge was pronounced dead Tuesday  at the scene near his home on Old Shoals Road, Monetta, Aiken County Tim Carlton said. He is believed to have died about 11 a.m. Monday.
Loge failed to show up for work in Columbia and his body was found by a neighbor after a call from Loge's wife, who was out of town, and could not reach her husband, Carlton said.

 

Doctor takes stand as mother's murder trial begins

Dr. Mary Lynn Sheram couldn’t say who harmed 2-year-old Mason “Tucker” Smith, but his severe brain injury was no accident, she testified Tuesday, and it wasn’t caused by Tucker holding his breath until he passed out.
Tucker suffered what is now called abusive head trauma, Sheram said. It used to be known as shaken baby syndrome.
Tucker’s mother, Mary “Katie” Smith is accused of murder in his Aug. 3, 2014, death. She has pleaded not guilty in Richmond County Superior Court.

 

Commission vote to reappoint assessors chairman fails

A divided Augusta Commission failed to reappoint longtime Board of Assessors Chairman Charles Smith to his post Tuesday, despite warnings from some that the move could jeopardize the state’s ongoing review of Augusta’s property tax digest.
At Tuesday’s commission meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Grady Smith pushed to reappoint Smith, who has led the board for many years, but several commissioners who have taken issue with recent board activities didn’t support the move.

 

Augusta man on trial for attack on estranged with and stepdaughter

The trial began Tuesday for an Augusta man accused of attacking his estranged wife and her daughter just before Christmas of last year.
Troy W. Deloatch, 50, has pleaded not guilty to charges of aggravated assault, family violence battery and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.
