A divided Augusta Commission failed to reappoint longtime Board of Assessors Chairman Charles Smith to his post Tuesday, despite warnings from some that the move could jeopardize the state’s ongoing review of Augusta’s property tax digest. At Tuesday’s commission meeting, Mayor Pro Tem Grady Smith pushed to reappoint Smith, who has led the board for many years, but several commissioners who have taken issue with recent board activities didn’t support the move. read more
