RCSS to make up missed day on Columbus Day

Richmond County public schools will be open Columbus Day to make up for closing Sept. 2 due to heavy rains in the area.
Students originally had Oct. 10 off, but the Richmond County School Board voted unanimously Tuesday to make up the day.
“We need every minute we can get for instruction,” Richmond County Superintendent Angela Pringle said. “And this was our only possible makeup day without cutting into Thanksgiving break.”

 

UGA graduate researcher killed, two other cyclists injured by DUI suspect in Athens

A University of Georgia graduate researcher was killed and two other bicyclists were injured Monday evening in east Athens by a suspected impaired driver.
Ashley Block, 25, who was a graduate student in Integrative Conservation and Anthropology at UGA, was killed during the Monday night group ride organized by The Hub Bicycles on South Milledge Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

 

No on tracks SC senior abuse cases

COLUMBIA — More than half of the abuse, neglect and exploitation cases involving vulnerable adults reported to state investigators are referred to other state and local agencies.

The Greenville News reports no one agency tracks the outcomes of the investigations.

Jefferson County, Burke County inch up latest prep football poll

Another impressive early-season win kept Thomson near the top, while Jefferson County moved up one spot in the latest Georgia Sports Writers Association High School Football Poll released Tuesday.
Thomson held its spot at No. 2 in Class AAAA behind Cartersville after beating Class AAA power Pace Academy 38-10 this past Friday. It marked a second consecutive win against a top-10 team within its respective classification and moved the Bulldogs to 4-0.

 

Marshall Square defendant agrees to pay millions to the Consumer Product Safety Commission

One of the defendants in the Marshall Square civil litigation agreed to pay a $5.55 million penalty in connection with the model of a heating and air unit it manufactured and was installed in the Columbia County retirement complex that caught fire last year.

Public help sought in weekend slaying

 
Authorities are asking for assistance as they investigate a weekend homicide.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with information on the slaying of Eugene Brown, 23, of Franklin Street, to contact investigators at (706) 821-1020 or (706) 821-1080.
About 3 a.m. Saturday, police responded to the 1900 block of Second Avenue and discovered Brown dead from at least one gunshot wound.
 

 

Ga. cop shot; suspect sought

JACKSON, Ga. — Law enforcement officials in central Georgia are looking for a man they say shot and wounded a Jackson police officer.

Jackson Police Chief James Morgan tells local media that Officer Sherry Hall was doing a routine patrol early Tuesday when she saw a man sitting on the side of the road.

Hall went to confront the man and he became aggressive and shot her. The bullet hit Hall in the abdomen area of her bulletproof vest.
