Food Bag robbers fled down train tracks in Stamford

STAMFORD-Police are still looking for two gunmen who robbed the well-known Food Bag on Hope Street early Friday morning and escaped by walking 2.5 miles down the railroad tracks to East Main Street.

Sgt. Robert Shawinsky said just after midnight on Thursday during a lull in the usually busy gas station and convenience store, two men wearing ski masks walked into the gas station with guns pulled and demanded cash.

Investigators have obtained video of the two from the store, but because the two were so covered up, it is difficult to identify them.

 

Racial slur painted on garage door being investigated in Stamford

STAMFORD-On a day when many citizens are observing the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Stamford police are investigating the weekend spray painting of racial epithet on the garage door of a Bulls Head home.

City police were called to High Clear Drive Saturday morning at 8:22 a.m. when resident Lexene Charles got into his car to warm up the engine and saw that someone had used a black can of spray paint to spell the seven-letter slur on the white garage door.

Stamford taxpayer worry: What will reval bring?

State law requires that towns assess the value of all properties every five years to see what’s changed, then adjust tax rates accordingly. The last time Stamford did a reval, as they’re called, Cuscuna was among the crowd of angry homeowners that descended on City Hall. The 2012 reval delivered Cuscuna a 25 percent tax hike that heightened the chances she will have to give up the century-old Shippan home where her family has lived for 30 years. According to information from Tax Assessor Gregory Stackpole, single-family homeowners must set aside, on average, $881 a month for taxes.

Former cop hopes to erase larceny charge in Stamford

STAMFORD-The attorney for the former Stamford police officer who took a Hawaiian vacation in late 2015 while being paid to be his Reserves unit, has asked to participate in a court diversionary program to wipe his larceny charge away.

STAMFORD — Probation officers conducting a curfew check busted the man’s two brothers for marijuana possession and sales, police said.

Two probation officers conducting an unannounced visit to a Greenwich Avenue residence about 8:30 p.m. Thursday detected the odor of marijuana when they approached the door, police said.

 

Court appearance for man who smothered his wife in Stamford

STAMFORD-The man who confessed to smothering to death his wife before deserting his young daughter in a New York City bus station in November made a brief appearance at the Stamford courthouse on Friday. With his hair cut short and dressed in a bright orange jumpsuit, Elmer Gomez Ruano, 32, seemed smaller as he stood quietly next to his defense attorney Darnell Crosland.

 

Pound of pot seized in Stamford home

Armed with a search warrant, police found three bags of marijuana -one stuffed under the gas filler door- weighing just over three ounces and $270 in cash.

Police also found plastic bags for packaging the marijuana for street sales and a digital scale.

Robbery suspect caught at Stamford courthouse

After police had been summoned to pick him up he became anxious just prior to striking a female loss prevention officer and pushing a male security officer and ran out of the store.

Police obtained a copy of his license and a credit card taken from him at the store and identified him on surveillance tape of the thefts.
