New name reflects mission of Stamford nonprofit

STAMFORD — A nonprofit established five years ago to provide resources for immigrants debuted a new name Sunday.

Building One Community will continue to offer ESL instruction, family and individual support services, job training and a worker center that connects employers and clients.

 

Stamford police nab suspected restaurant burglars

STAMFORD — Authorities on Friday arrested two Bridgeport men suspected of breaking into an Asian restaurant and a pizzeria on Cove Road last month.

Investigators with the police department’s Property Crime Unit worked with authorities in nearby towns to identify the two suspects, according to the report.

 

Road closures announced for Stamford march

The event — one of hundreds that will take place simultaneously with the Women’s March on Washington — is scheduled to begin at noon at Mill River Park, where organizers plan to hold speeches.

At 1 p.m., protesters will walk the blocks that circle the Trump Parc building at the corner of Broad Street and Washington Boulevard.

 

NWS: Nor’easter to hit Conn. with strong winds, rain

A “significant” nor’easter bringing heavy rain and strong winds is expected to hit Connecticut starting late Sunday.

“Downed trees and power lines are likely with numerous power outages,” the National Weather Service says in a statement.

The morning and afternoon commute could be rough with heavy rain and strong winds.

“Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles and on elevated roads and bridges.,” the NWS says.

The National Weather Service says winds are expected between 30 and 40 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph.

Suspect busted in ‘large-scale’ mail intercept ring

Investigator Michael Stempien, of the Stamford Police Department, said in the arrest affidavit that the leader of the ring calls Bank of America using valid customers’ accounts and requests new debit cards and PINs be sent to those customers’ home addresses in the U.S.

The man, later identified as Rosemond, admitted to Wilton police that he removed several credit cards from mailboxes in Stamford, according to the affidavit.

After a months-long investigation, police charged Rosemond with 57 counts of illegal illegal use of credit card, seven counts of credit card theft, five counts each

 

Accidental shot lands man in Stamford jail

Egardo “Coco” Perez, 31, of Ansonia was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree reckless endangerment, possession of a pistol without a permit, unlawful discharge of a firearm and carrying a weapon in a motor vehicle. Perez, who turned himself for missing a court date in Bridgeport a few days after the Jan. 6, shooting, was sitting in the passenger seat of the woman’s car parked at the roadside Gus Edson Park on Holly Pond when the shot was fired.

Professional burglar slapped with more break-in charges in Stamford

Judge Auden Grogins ordered that Butler, who has dozens of convictions on his long criminal record that began in 1974, be held on an additional $105,000 court appearance bond.

Butler, whose address on his court records shows him residing at the homeless men’s shelter on Pacific Street, has been in jail since early December unable to post a $150,000 bond.

When officers searched the building they found that someone had pried a lock out of a door to gain entrance and jimmied open another door and desks drawers were gone through in a search for petty valuables.

 

Shooting victim survives night, search for shooter continues in Stamford

Police are now saying that the gun shots that erupted on High Street 19 minutes before the shooting took place inside the West Main Convenience store at 419 West Main at 7:04 p.m. are related.

Barcello said that evidence in the form of matching spent shell casings gathered at both scenes connect the two.

Police worked into the early morning hours interviewing and looking for witnesses and two of the three squads of detectives inside the department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigations are working the case, Barcello said.

 

Person shot in head inside West Side bodega in Stamford

Police report that the victim was shot in the head inside the West Main Convenience store located at 417 West Main Street shortly after 7 p.m.

Westbound traffic was shut down on West Main Street as officers searched the area for evidence.
