Danbury officer charged with punching handcuffed suspect

DANBURY - A city police officer turned himself this week on a charge of breach of peace for purportedly punching a handcuffed suspect, authorities said.

Video footage of an arrest on July 29 that was uncovered by State Police investigators shows Officer David Williams punching a suspect who had already been handcuffed and was in custody for allegedly assaulting an other police officer, authorities said in a statement released by the police department Tuesday.

 

Accident causes delays in downtown Danbury

DANBURY - Traffic is becoming heavy on the north end of Main Street and the nearby on ramp to Interstate 84 has been shut down due to a two car accident.

Authorities said the accident occurred at around 1 p.m. when a car leaving the interstate at Exit 5 crossed over the median and slammed into another car that was entering the highway.

 

Drivers racing in Newtown cause head on crash

NEWTOWN - Police are investigating a serious head-on collision along Hungintown Road Friday after two cars were seen racing down the long and winding rural roadway.

Both cars received extensive front-end damage as a result of the crash and three people were tranported to Danbury Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Main Street renovation plans still rankle

RIDGEFIELD—Local business owners and residents said Friday that recent revisions to a renovation plan for Main Street downtown don’t go far enough. The original plan, devised by First Selectman Rudy Marconi in meetings with state transportation officials, would have widened the street, moved the entrance to the CVS parking lot, added a turn lane at Catoonah Street and eliminated some curbside parking spots, all in an effort to smooth downtown traffic.

 

Danbury man facing drug, weapons charges

DANBURY - A man who police say had more than a pound of marijuana was arrested this week on a variety of drug and weapons charges.

Dante Stebbins, 27, was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell, possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle and altering a firearm, police said, after an investigation by the department’s Special Investigations Division.

 

Brookfield bank teller charged with stealing customer’s money

Metita Demiri was arrested Wednesday on a number of charges including first-degree larceny and more than a dozen identity theft charges.

Police said there investigation began in October, 2015 when investigators were approached by managers of the bank’s local branch alleging that Demiri accessed customer bank accounts and used the money to pay her own bills.

 

Crash involing state police cruiser closes Route 7 in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD - Super 7 northbound was closed to traffic near Exit 12 Monday morning due to a motor vehicle accident involving a state police cruiser.

Police said a two-car accident at around 8:15 forced the closure of the limited access highway.

All traffic was routed through exit 12. Ambulances have been sent to the scene.

Whether or not there are serious injuries wasn’t immediately known.

Police: Robbery suspects start fire, paint swastikas on Newtown liquor store

NEWTOWN - Police are searching for two male suspects who officers say set fire to a liquor store and painted swastikas on the building during a robbery.

Officers and state police K9 searched the premises for the suspects and found a racial slur and two swastikas painted on the rear door.

 

NWS: Nor’easter to hit Conn. with strong winds, rain

A “significant” nor’easter bringing heavy rain and strong winds is expected to hit Connecticut starting late Sunday.

“Downed trees and power lines are likely with numerous power outages,” the National Weather Service says in a statement.

The morning and afternoon commute could be rough with heavy rain and strong winds.

“Travel could be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles and on elevated roads and bridges.,” the NWS says.

The National Weather Service says winds are expected between 30 and 40 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph.
