Officials: No explosion in New Milford fire

Authorities said the fire appears to have started in the home’s chimney, which was connected to a wood-burning stove.

Fire Marshal Brian Ohmen said the fire shows the need for homeowners to regularly clean out their chimneys, particularly those chimneys connected to a fireplace or wood-burning stove.

Major concerns included a $7.3 million reduction in Education Cost Sharing funds and the new requirement for towns to pay one third of teacher pensions. The ramifications of receiving such state reductions in such an abrupt manner would force the schools to make severe cuts and dramatically reduce our ability to educate our students.

Himes, D-Conn., visited the University of Connecticut-Stamford for the last in a series of town hall meetings with his Fairfield County constituents to discuss topics spanning health care, defense, immigration and trade deals.

Comments from audience members about education, the Affordable Care Act and using so-called “soft power” in dealing with other countries, were met with applause.

A woman from Stamford asked Himes how his constituents could work with other communities and help him advance a Democratic agenda and hold people in office accountable.

Soup fest to benefit Danbury’s oldest soup kitchen

DANBURY - Local chefs will cook their best soups for an annual fundraiser to benefit the city’s oldest soup kitchen. The annual Soupfest Competition planned for March 9 at Maplewood senior living facility will benefit the Dorothy Day Hospitality House, according to an event poster. The event, planned for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., is open to the public. Attendees will act as tasters and judges, according to the poster. The suggested admission is $10. Maplewood is located at 22 Hospital Ave.

 

Explosion, house fire in New Milford

Police and fire departments from several town agencies responded to an explosion that caused a house fire, the Northville Volunteer Fire Department confirms.

The explosion, which is being investigated, occurred in a residential neighborhood at 6 Mare Lane, fire said.

No one is believed to be seriously injured and the occupants of the house were evacuated.

The residence sits on a dead end street off Hipp Road, near Schaghticoke Middle School.

According to property records the two-story structure is a single-family colonial.

 

High winds cause thousands to lose power

The state is under a High Wind Warning until 11 a.m. Thursday with a steady wind blowing from the west between 15 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 to 60 mph.

Danbury Muncipal Airport had a peak gust of 63 mph early this morning; Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford recorded 59 mph and Oxford airport saw the peak wind at 57 mph.

Hardest hits towns in UI’s coverage area include Easton, Milford, Ansonia Trumbull and Woodbridge where more than 43 percent of its customers have lost power.

 

ATM discovered in Southbury

SOUTHBURY - Apparently someone is missing an Automatic Teller Machine.

State Police announced Wednesday that an ATM was located behind a building on Main Street Wednesday morning. but who owns the machine apparently remains a mystery.

Police are asking anyone with information on the machine to contact state police at 203-267-2200 or text TIP711 with any information to 274637. All calls will remain confidential.

Police search for driver in hit-and-run crash

State police were called to the scene of an accident at about 8:55 a.m. Saturday, where a car pushed a black pick-up truck into traffic barriers on the exit 6 off-ramp. The driver who hit the truck was described by police as a 6-foot-tall white woman in her 30s, with brown hair, wearing hospital-like scrubs.

 

Bridgeport state trooper saves man attempting to jump from New Haven bridge

At about 5:25 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, state police arrived at the Q bridge to find a man on the opposite side of the safety barrier. Police encouraged anyone in suicidal crisis or emotion distress to contact the 24/7, toll-free National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
