Monday fire destroys home near Lafayette

LAFAYETTE — A fire Monday afternoon destroyed a home and caused it to collapse.
The Lafayette-Jackson Township Fire Department responded to the fire at 3630 Murray Road, three miles northwest of Lafayette, shortly before 2 p.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene to find both stories of the vacant two-story home engulfed in flames, Assistant Chief Brent Bassitt said.
Tanker trucks took turns shuttling water onto the scene, Bassitt said, and crews spent about three hours at the site.
There were no injuries reported. The home was a total loss, he said.

 

Ottawa roads closed for the week

OTTAWA — Safety Services and Supply will have three roads closed this week while resurfacing CSX railroad crossings.
The affected roads are Locust, Fourth and Main streets. The amount of time these roads will be closed depends on how quickly crews complete the resurfacing.
Detours will be posted to reroute traffic.

Lieutenant governor to visit Putnam County next month

OTTAWA — Ohio 2018 gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor will visit Putnam County on Sept. 12 as part of the Putnam County Republican Party “Get to Know the Candidates” event.
The event will begin at 6:45 p.m. at the Putnam County Education Services Center, 124 Putnam Parkway. Tickets will be $15 per person and can be purchase by mailing a check to Putnam County Republican Party, P.O Box 445, Ottawa, OH 45875.

 

Beer Barrel to open location in Maumee

LIMA — Good Food Restaurants announced the opening of a sixth location of Beer Barrel Pizza & Grill, at the Shops at Fallen Timbers, Maumee, in November.
The new location will occupy a 10,300-square foot building. It will feature a 250-seat dining room, a full bar, two patios, a wood-burning fireplace, a children’s arcade area and many other features.
Currently, Beer Barrel Pizza & Grill has locations in Lima, St. Marys, Columbus and Findlay.

 

Special education federal funding discussed

LIMA — The Lima City special education director Brian Wischmeyer will hold a public meeting on special education federal funding at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25, at South Science Technology Magnet School, 755 St. Johns Ave., Lima.

Lima girl headed to national pageant finals

LIMA — A 12-year-old Lima girl will compete as a national finalist in the National American Miss pageant at Disneyland later this year after finishing as third runner-up in a regional competition.
Vanessa Stegg, the daughter of Dario and Autumn Stegg, earned the trip to the national pageant in Anaheim, Calif., during Thanksgiving week with her third-place finish in the talent portion of the regional competition. She will have the opportunity to win a share of more than $500,000 in cash and prizes.
She is a seventh-grader at South Science Tech school in Lima.

Identity theft explored at Lifetree Cafe

Perry schools participate in federal program

LIMA — Perry schools will operate the Community Eligibility Provision Program under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2017-2018 school year. All schools that operate under this program will serve breakfast and lunch to all children at no charge, eliminating the collection of meal applications for free/reduced-price, and paid student meals. This program reduces the burdens for families and school administrators and helps ensure that students receive nutritious meals.
