Man who shot judge was stopped earlier for faulty headlight

COLUMBUS (AP) — The man who shot an Ohio judge outside a courthouse was stopped by a police officer hours earlier for having a defective headlight as he drove downtown in the early morning darkness, authorities said.
The suspect, 51-year-old Nathaniel Richmond, was fatally shot Monday after wounding Jefferson County Judge Joseph Bruzzese Jr., who’s expected to survive.
The shooting happened about four hours after Richmond was warned about his headlights during the traffic stop, The Intelligencer and Wheeling News-Register in nearby West Virginia reported.

 

Ohio mayors seek emergency response center for opioid crisis

COLUMBUS (AP) — An organization representing Ohio big-city mayors is urging Gov. John Kasich to establish a dedicated emergency operations center to coordinate the state’s response to the opioid crisis and appointment of an opioid czar.
In a letter dated Monday, the Ohio Mayors Alliance commends the state’s work but suggests seven potential improvements based on observations gathered from local communities.

 

Sanchez homers twice, Tanaka sharp as Yanks rout Tigers 13-4

DETROIT — Gary Sanchez hit two home runs — including a first-inning drive estimated at nearly 500 feet — and Masahiro Tanaka pitched seven tidy innings in his return from the disabled list to lead the New York Yankees to a 13-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night.
Sanchez’s two-run shot in the first was estimated at 493 feet by Statcast. The Yankees led 2-0 after that and never looked back.
Tanaka (9-10) allowed three runs and six hits in his first appearance since Aug. 9. He’d been out with right shoulder inflammation.

 

Bryant nicked, lefty Rizzo plays 3B, Cubs beat Reds 13-9

CINCINNATI — Cubs star Kris Bryant exited after being hit in the left hand by a pitch, and lefty Anthony Rizzo wound up playing third base as Chicago beat the Cincinnati Reds 13-9 Tuesday night for their seventh win in nine games.
The defending World Series champions moved a season-high 10 games over .500. This victory came with a late offensive surge, with the Cubs scoring nine runs in the last three innings.

 

Fister fires 1-hitter as Red Sox romp Indians 9-1

CLEVELAND — Doug Fister gave up a leadoff homer in the first inning to Francisco Lindor and then nothing else, finishing with a career-best one-hitter, and Eduardo Nunez had five RBIs as the Boston Red Sox rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Letter: Picnic and donations honor veterans

Recently a campaign was started through the Chained Eagles and Senior Citizens Center to start collecting items for the veterans at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Dayton.
They were to be distributed at the annual picnic on August 6th. Members of the Senior Center and many non-members came forth with donations. One lady from Wapakoneta donated 10 afghans she had made and people walked in off the street with donations of personal items, food, etc.

 

Cavaliers trade Irving to Celtics for Thomas

CLEVELAND — Kyrie Irving’s next cross-over will come against the Cavaliers.
Cleveland’s All-Star guard, who asked owner Dan Gilbert to trade him earlier this summer, was dealt Tuesday night to the Boston Celtics in exchange for star Isaiah Thomas, forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and a 2018 first-round draft pick, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press.
