State police Col. Kerry Gilpin says justice in her late sister’s three decade-old murder is “within reach” after a North Carolina man was arrested in the 1986 slaying of the teenage girl from Kingston.Michael Arthur Hand, 61, of Troutman, N.C., is in custody in North Carolina pending a court appearance today linked to the slaying of 15-year-old Tracy Gilpin of Kingston, authorities said.Hand, who is in the custody of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office, lived in Kingston at the time of the homicide, a police source confirmed.

 

Police seeking suspect in theft

Wilmington police are asking for the public’s help identifying a burglary suspect.Police released photos of a man who allegedly broke into a home on Wednesday afternoon.In a Facebook post, Wilmington police said the suspect drove a blue Hyundai Sonata to the house he broke into about 2:55 p.m. on Wednesday.The Hyundai is either a 2015, 2016 or 2017 model, police said.The suspect was last seen wearing a North Face jacket in surveillance footage released by police.

A Plymouth North High School teacher placed on leave for an alleged “alarming” remark he made Friday to students about a gun probably is constitutionally protected — but he may want to choose his words more carefully in the future — a leading free-speech advocate said.

An East Boston city councilor says a student who was arrested last week for making threats and later detained by immigration agents should not prompt a scare among students who may be illegal immigrants because the high school has fostered a welcoming environment for all pupils.“The community of East Boston High School has made a concerted effort to make sure all the children feel that they’re welcomed, their families feel welcomed,” said City Councilor Lydia Edwards.

 

NWS: Blizzard conditions likely Monday into Tuesday

Blizzard-like snow is heading towards Massachusetts on Monday, expected to begin by midnight at the latest.National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson says more than a foot of snow will fall onto the Greater Boston area, bring high winds up to 50 mph. The Cape and Islands could experience wind gusts up to 60 mph. "It's not technically a blizzard, but there could be blizzard-like conditions with low visibility and high winds," Simpson said. "Certainly for Greater Boston it's definitely and all-snow event."

 

Body found in burning cornfield

State and local authorities are investigating the death of an individual whose body was found last night in a burning cornfield in Hatfield.Jennifer Mieth, spokeswoman for state Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey, said the body was located at approximately 9:30 p.m.A spokesperson for Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan referred questions to Ostroskey's office.

A North Carolina man has been arrested for the 1986 murder of 15-year-old Tracy Gilpin of Kingston, the sister of State Police Col. Kerry A. Gilpin.Department spokesman David Procopio said Michael Arthur Hand, 61, of Troutman, N.C., is in custody in North Carolina pending a court appearance there tomorrow.Procopio said authorities have already begun rendition proceedings to return Hand to Massachusetts.Hand, who is currently in the custody of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office, lived in Kingston at the time of the homicide, a source confirmed.

 

Massachusetts city restores its Civil War-era cannons

FITCHBURG, Mass. — The city of Fitchburg has its Civil War-era cannons back after a more than $30,000 restoration project.The Sentinel and Enterprise reports that the two cannons that have been stationed in Monument Park in downtown Fitchburg have been gone seven months.Steen Cannons, in Ashland, Kentucky, replaced the wood carriages of both cannons with a carriage made out of aluminum that looks like wood.City officials say that will allow the cannons to remain outside year-round.

 

Milford couple accused of abusing son

A Milford couple is under arrest for allegedly abusing their 11-month-old son, according to police.Jeremy Coleman, 25, and Helena McKinstry, 22, are expected to be arraigned tomorrow in Milford District Court on charges of assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury and wanton or reckless conduct creating risk to a child.Coleman is being held on $20,000 bail. McKinstry is being held on $10,000 bail.Milford police said the boy and his twin sister are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

 

Plymouth teacher on leave over "alarming" gun remarks

A Plymouth North High School teacher has been placed on leave, accused of making an "alarming" statement to students Friday about a gun.
