To get out of the attack, he bit her arm and threw one of her shoes out of the vehicle to get her to go after it. City officials are reviewing a report on the police department’s yearlong test of body cameras.The City Council is hosting a City Hall hearing tomorrow to hear from the public and police officials. The department released in January a preliminary report by criminal justice researchers at Northeastern University on the 100-camera pilot program launched in September 2016.

A 19-year-old East Boston High School student who was arrested last week for allegedly making threats at school is in ICE custody after authorities realized he’d been living in the United States illegally since 2015, an ICE official said.

 

Rescuers can't save pregnant porpoise left ashore in storm

BOSTON — Rescuers say they were unable to save a stranded, pregnant porpoise that washed up in Boston during a recent storm.The New England Aquarium Rescue Team responded immediately to the harbor porpoise, which became stranded Wednesday in the Dorchester neighborhood near the Harbor Point housing development. An aquarium spokesman says the animal died just before rescuers arrived at the scene near the storm's height.

 

Man dies from likely carbon monoxide poisoning after storm

METHUEN, Mass. — A man using a generator to bring electricity into his powerless home after Thursday's nor'easter has died.The Eagle Tribune reports 55-year-old Joseph Sholik was running two gasoline-powered generators in his basement when he was found unconscious Friday by his wife.Sholik was taken to Holy Family Hospital and airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.Police suspect his cause of death to be carbon monoxide poisoning, although his autopsy is still being completed.

 

Massachusetts high school holds poll for new nickname

MONTAGUE, Mass. — A western Massachusetts high school is asking members of the community to help pick a news sports mascot after dropping its Native American-themed nickname.The task force charged with finding a new mascot for Turners Falls High School has published a poll on its Facebook page so residents, alumni and students can choose from among 16 semifinalists.The Gill-Montague Regional School Committee, over the objection of many residents and alumni, last year decided to drop Indians.

 

Victim of veteran home shooting has Massachusetts connection

BOSTON — A victim killed in the hostage standoff at a veteran's home in California has a Massachusetts connection.New England Cable News reports 48-year-old Christine Loeber, Executive Director of the Pathway Home, got her Master's Degree in social work at Boston College. She was also an affiliate relations manager at the media outlet prior to pursuing her degree.Boston College spokesman Jack Dunn called the tragedy, "senseless," and says Loeber was a gifted student "passionate about serving veterans."

 

New Springfield marijuana dispensary holds job fair

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A soon-to-open medical marijuana dispensary in Massachusetts is holding a job fair this weekend.Masslive.com reports that dispensary owner INSA Inc. has scheduled the job fair from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Springfield's Hilton Garden Inn.They hope to hire 25 workers.The company's CEO says he is looking for "talented, enthusiastic individuals for positions in cultivation, bookkeeping, processing/lab, security and retail sales, among others."
