Suicide prevention advocates to present awards at Statehouse

BOSTON — Suicide prevention advocates are planning to gather at the Massachusetts Statehouse to present awards and press lawmakers for additional suicide prevention funding in the state budget.The Monday event sponsored by the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention will begin with several legislators presenting awards to activists from Andover, the Berkshires, the South Shore, Nantucket and Newburyport.

 

National Weather Service: Snow starts tonight with up to 2 feet expected

The National Weather Service is sounding the alarm that some areas of the state could be buried under another 2 feet of new snow when the third nor'easter in less than two weeks hits tonight.A winter storm warning will take effect at 11 p.m.General accumulations of a foot to 18 inches in blizzard-like conditions should be expected, with eastern Massachusetts once again in Old Man Winter's bull's eye throughout tomorrow.

 

Immigration officials arrest teen charged in school threat

BOSTON — Immigration officials have detained a Boston high school student suspected of threatening to "shoot up" the school.Authorities say the 19-year-old made threats against East Boston High School. School officials declined to elaborate, but an automated phone call sent to families says he made "verbal threats of violence" toward members of the school community.

 

Police seek owner of Worcester key to the city

NORTH ADAMS — If anyone is missing a large, golden key to the city of Worcester, North Adams police have it.It's unclear how the key ended up more than two hours from the Massachusetts city it belongs to. North Adams police reported finding the key March 5 in a Facebook post seeking its owner.The key was found in a case emblazoned with the name of Mayor Andrew Holmstrom, who served the city of Worcester from 1950 to 1953. Holmstrom died in 1970.

 

Historic African-American site vandalized with racist slurs

NANTUCKET, Mass. — An African-American historical site in Massachusetts was vandalized with racist graffiti.The outside of the 19th century African Meeting House in Nantucket was spray-painted with racist and sexually explicit slurs over the weekend, police said.Officers gathered evidence before dozens of community members and public works employees scrubbed the spray paint off of the front door on Sunday morning.The director of the meeting house, Charity-Grace Mofsen, told the Cape Cod Times that she "broke down" when she saw the graffiti.

 

Region braces for yet another winter storm

The third major winter storm to hit the region in two weeks is expected to bring blizzard-like conditions and as much as a foot of snow tonight into tomorrow evening — with a new risk of power outages.

 

Milford duo arrested on child abuse charges

A Milford couple are under arrest for allegedly abusing their 11-month-old son, according to police.Jeremy Coleman, 25, and Helena McKinstry, 22, are expected to be arraigned tomorrow in Milford District Court on charges of assault and battery on a child causing substantial injury and wanton or reckless conduct creating risk to a child.Coleman is being held on $20,000 bail. McKinstry is being held on $10,000 bail.Milford police said the boy and his twin sister are in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

 

Police find burning body in Hatfield field

State and local authorities are investigating the death of a person whose body was found aflame Saturday night in a burning cornfield in Hatfield.Mary Carey, spokeswoman for Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan, said the remains were located off Bridge Lane at approximately 9:30 p.m. Saturday by police checking out a report of a fire.“Upon arrival, officers located a deceased human body on fire in a field,” Carey said.No identifying information about the deceased, including gender, was immediately released.

 

Seal found grounded on Cape returned to seas

A harp seal found grounded on the backyard grass of an outer Cape property was returned to its ocean home thanks to the International Fund of Animal Welfare.Trained responders from the animal rescue and conservation group responded to a call to its marine mammal rescue hotline and used a blanket to capture the seal, which was placed in a wood and wire crate for a health assessment, according to a video of the rescue posted on the nonprofit’s Facebook page Saturday.Harp seals often wander far from the open ocean, the group said.

 

NYC copter ride turns fatal after river crash

A helicopter crashed into New York City’s East River last night, killing at least two passengers while the pilot escaped and three other passengers were rescued by divers.Witnesses said the crash occurred shortly after 7 p.m. near Roosevelt Island.Video posted on Twitter showed a red helicopter splash down in the river and turn belly up as its rotors chopped at the water.
