Gunman, 3 hostages dead after standoff

YOUNTVILLE, Calif. — A gunman and three hostages were found dead inside a California home for disabled and aging war veterans yesterday following a daylong standoff.The gunman, who authorities said once served in the U.S. military, opened fire yesterday inside the veterans home where he took three hostages and was holding police at bay as negotiators sought to make contact with him for several hours, authorities said.Police said three female victims and the male gunman were found dead inside the facility.

Man shot by police held without bail

SPRINGFIELD — A man shot by Massachusetts police after he allegedly tried to back over them with his car has been held without bail pending a hearing to determine if he presents a public danger.Luis Suarez, of Springfield, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, failure to stop for police, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle.His dangerousness hearing is scheduled for Monday.
