As last night’s nor’easter winds down and leaves this region this morning, breezy weather is expected to linger, with gusts as high as 40 mph in some areas.National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said skies will stay mostly cloudy with a high near 40 degrees.The warm weather this afternoon is expected to quickly melt most of the 4 to 8 inches of snow that was expected to fall in the city and could lead to slick driving conditions.

 

Game for new gig at UMass

State Gaming Commission Chairman Stephen Crosby is considering leaving one troubled institution for another — and potentially doubling his already-six-figure salary — by taking over as chancellor of UMass Boston.Crosby said he’s agreed to be considered in the University of Massachusetts Boston’s global search for a new chancellor to run the school of 17,000, the second-largest in the state system. In a statement, Crosby said he was “fully focused” on his current job but left the door open for a move.

 

Protecting the 2018 Marathon

Federal agents and local police are looking at a full range of potential threats from shooters to weaponized vehicles as they plan security for next month’s marathon, Boston FBI chief Harold “Hank” Shaw said yesterday.Shaw did not indicate that authorities have detected any known threat to the April 16 event — a 26.2-mile race from Hopkinton to the Back Bay. But he said security officials don’t plan on being caught with their guard down.

 

Police release 911 calls in library stabbing

Police have released 911 calls from horrified witnesses to the brutal stabbing at the Winchester Public Library yesterday along with dozens of reports filed since 2012 detailing their dealings with murder defendant Jeffrey Yao — including an account of him “fondling” a hunting knife and taking it into his younger brother’s room.“This is the library, somebody is stabbing someone, please come, hurry. Hurry!” one caller pleads.

Nerve agent used in hit on ex-spy

LONDON — A Russian ex-spy and his daughter fighting for their lives in an English hospital were attacked with a nerve agent in a targeted murder attempt, British police said yesterday.The case has further strained relations between Russia and Britain, which has said it will respond strongly if the Russian government is linked to the attack. It has overtones of a 2006 fatal attack on a former Russian spy that was blamed on the Kremlin.

 

Man indicted for ID fraud, stealing SNAP, health benefits

A 29-year-old Boston man was indicted yesterday for using stolen identities to avoid drug charges and collect food stamps and MassHealth benefits, authorities said.The Suffolk County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Clei Sandoval-Arias with two counts of identity fraud, four counts of furnishing a false name at arrest and two counts of larceny over $250 by single scheme, Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley said.

 

Book – (not a dictionary) – thrown at ‘Spelling Bee Bandit’

A Chelsea man who earned the nickname “Spelling Bee Bandit” after robbing four Boston-area banks by passing the teller a note with the word robbery misspelled was sentenced to seven years behind bars yesterday, officials said.Jason S. Englen, 34, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Boston to seven years in prison followed by three years of supervised release, U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling’s office announced. Englen pleaded guilty last year to four counts of bank robbery and had been facing 20 years in jail.

IRS agent indicted on rape and assault charges

BOSTON — A Boston-based Internal Revenue Service agent has been indicted on multiple charges related to alleged assaults on a college student last summer.The Suffolk County District attorney says 44-year-old James Clarke is charged with aggravated rape, indecent assault, battery and other charges in relation to an incident on July 26, 2017, where he allegedly invited a 21-year-old woman for drinks after work.
